Questions concerning Dallas Nursing Institute

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum and I'm on here in hopes that someone can help me out. I believe I have finished all the required pre-reqs for entrance into the DNI ADN program. Note: I am NOT going in as an LVN, I'm hoping to just be admitted directly into the ADN program. So, just a few questions:

-How is the HESI? Which sections of the HESI does DNI require to be completed?

-Is the program very competitive?

-Is it possible that I could be accepted as early as the spring '11 semester?

-How are the classes and teachers?

-How expensive is the program?

I realize these are a lot of questions, but ANY information you can give me would be greatly appreciated :)

Thank you so much!

I believe that the tuition for their generic ADN program is $26,000. I have heard that they might give you a rather small discount off the total tuition for having completed prerequisite classes elsewhere.

I also applied for the generic ADN program at Dallas Nursing Institute back in June of 2010 for the Fall of 2010. I never heard back from them until I went in to speak to one of the advisors the beginning of this week. They kept delaying their final selection and is now delaying the whole program for January of 2011. I thought it was weird that they never told the applicants why the application process was taking so long. I dont even think the school is accredited.....maybe Im wrong.

As for the HESI tests, they make you take all of the sections (Grammar, Math, Reading Comp., Vocabulary, and Anatomy and Physiology. The test must be administered at that school too. They average your score by taking the grade from each section and average it out.

Hope my information helps you! Good Luck!

Yeah I actually know that they are accredited. But what do you mean they delayed the admission process? Was there no ADN classes this semester?

Yeah I actually know that they are accredited.
DNI is not accredited by the NLN, CCNE, or any major body that grants accreditation to RN programs. They are merely approved to operate by the Texas Board of Nursing.
Yeah I actually know that they are accredited.

Most would-be nursing students know enough to ask a school if it's accredited, but, when the school answers, "Yes," they don't know to ask any more than that. The DNI is "accredited," but only by one of the organizations that accredits proprietary tech/voc schools -- it is not accredited by either of the two nursing accrediting bodies (NLNAC or CCNE) or by the organization that accredits "regular" colleges and universities in TX. This means that it's unlikely any credits earned at DNI would be accepted for transfer credit by a "regular" college or university if/when a DNI graduate wanted to return to school to further her/his education and career opportunities, and it means that DNI graduates will always be, for nursing purposes, graduates of an unaccredited program. This can come back to bite you in several different ways throughout your career -- most programs for furthering your nursing education require that you be a graduate of an accredited (meaning NLNAC or CCNE) program to apply, and some employers will only hire graduates of accredited (again, NLNAC or CCNE) programs. Not all employers, not even most -- but why close off any future career opportunities for yourself this early in the process??

Why? Because I got 88's and 89's in A&P one and two. Now from the rumor wheel, it seems like NO RN program will accept me. Is that rumor true? I'm just really depressed right now. I've been working so hard and it just continues to seem like an unachievable goal. :(

If you want it badly enough, commute to a nursing program in Oklahoma. The entrance requirements are not as stringent as they are in Texas. I lived in Fort Worth while driving to school in Oklahoma last year. In fact, half of my class was from Texas. It's certainly doable.

For example, the nursing program at Murray State College only has one prerequisite (Chemistry). A&P is not even a prerequisite, so they'll happily accept the 'B' grades that you earned in those classes.

Thanks, for this information. I went to the website and the information looks promising. I am willing to travel to ensure that my degree with be worth something when I am done. I too was looking at DNI went through the whole process, but later decided to hold off on attending. The school is unorganized it could be related to the new owners of the school.

So if I got my degree from this school in Oklahoma, would my RN still be applicable in Texas?

No, there was not. The school never sent any notification by email, mail or by phone to notify. You were lucky if you were able to speak to anyone and still were not given any clear answers. I understand the next class start will be Jan/2011, they want to evaluate the pass rate of the previous classes already enrolled.

Nursing school and nursing licensure are two entirely separate issues. Once you complete an approved nursing program (approved by the BON of the state in which it's located), you can apply for licensure in whatever state you choose. You are not limited to just the state in which you went to school (you don't even have to get a license in the state you went to school in) -- the same as you can apply for a license in other states in the future if you wish to move.

In this case, you would (in this hypothetical situation) go to school in OK, and then apply for licensure in TX instead of OK when you graduated. No biggie. :)
