New Grads or Soon to Be

U.S.A. Texas

Any new grads or soon to be going to be or already applied to internships? Just curious to where and when anyone has?! :nurse:

I'm getting ready to graduate this May.. I've applied to alot of different hospitals but basically wanting ICU or PICU. Memorial Hermann, Cy-fair, Women's and St. Lukes. So finger's crossed hoping to hear from anyone soon!! :uhoh21:

With the extremely tough job market and loads of competition I'm not sure many people will be willing to offer up where they've seen internships posted/available. This is a very public forum and people flock to job postings when they get word they are open. Sounds terrible but I certainly wouldn't be advertising where I had applied and only squander any hopes of even getting an interview by increasing my competition!! Not in this market!

Best advice is to search extensively on your own, be open to other areas that may not have been your first choice and apply early and make sure you follow up after you apply. Best of luck, and congrats on finishing nursing school.

It is kind of sad but very true these days. I wish people did not have to feel this way.

New Grad in May (RN).... will be moving to Houston and I have applied lots of places. No luck yet though :( Hopefully after I pass the NCLEX and get my license :)

I have a friend who is applying in the Odessa/Midland area... plenty of job opportunities out that way! (not throwing her under the bus, she basically has a THE job she wanted and it's what? March!! woo hoo so excited for her!) Anyways, they were contacting her not the other way around :)

Hi Mattie123,

Congratulations on getting into the versant program!!!! That is my goal, to participte in a Versant residency program. Do you have any knowledge on the hospitals in the Odessa/Midland area? Also, how did the interviews go? What Qs were you asked? I have an interview coming up and want to be better prepared for it.

Any tips or suggestions would b greatly apprecated.

Congratulations again!!!

Hi!

Thank you! I don't really know anything about the Odessa/Midland hospitals other than they were hiring and very eager to have BSN prepared nurses! I don't know a whole lot other than that b/c I didn't apply there, but I did have a friend who did and she was the first one of the first people to get a job in our class!!! Good Luck on your interview with Seton. Out of the interviews I have been to, they are very friendly and eager to help you, help yourself! haha Here are some interview questions that I practiced with and they definitely helped me: 1. what are you strengths and weaknesses(improvements)?

2. how do you think your strengths and weaknesses can help you as a nurse?

3. what are your long term and short term goals or where do you see yourself in 5 years?

4. What are some characteristics you have seen in instructors or supervisors that you would want in a supervisor?

5. what are some characteristics you would not want in a supervisor

6. what do you look for in an employer?

7. What characteristics do you think an employer should look for in their employees?

8. when was there a time you had a conflict and how did you handle it or what did you learn from it?

9. What does teamwork mean to you?

10. what does professionalism mean to you?

11. what are 3 medical diagnosis of patients you had in the hospital that you enjoyed?

12. why this hospital?

13. why nursing?

14. what did you enjoy most about nursing school?

15. now this can come at the beginning or end of the interview what questions do you have for us or do you have any questions.......HAVE QUESTIONS EX: WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU HAVE ON YOUR PARTICULAR UNIT?.... WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU HAVE FOR ADVANCEMENT IN YOUR COMPANY?

16. tell me about yourself

17. Depending on what floor you are working for, brush up on some general knowledge about that floor. For example I went through my NCLEX book and reviewed cardiac issues (CHF, angina, MI, etc.)

I really hope this helps and again good luck on your interview! Relax, be yourself, and you should be fine!! :)

WOW!!! Much thanks to you mattie123 :yeah: This surely will help me an any others prepping for an interview.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

May Grad...moved from out of state about 2 weeks ago...filled application out to Seton residency 2 week before I moved...sent all requirements.... Heard from them about 1 week ago...said my app had been approved and asked em what shift I wanna work, what areas I wanted to work in, and a few other questions. So I replied, and they said that the only areas available are CC, and that I should hurry up and let them know if that's what I wanted..I said sure..so now I'm waiting on the next move.

BTW the application deadline is past. Sorry. I think they have another one in October.

God is GOOD!

I received a job offer in one of the facilities offering the Versant Residency Program!!!!!

FutureNurse1016 How did they do that? I got an email saying my app was approved and what depts they had positions in.....then never heard back. Did you call & bug them or what?

I just accepted a position at a rehab TX, but I really wanna do the Versant for the experience. I realize they don't pay that much but...the experience is priceless. SO what are the details....don't leave us hanging:confused:
