Looking For The Right School

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello all,

So a little background story, for the first year in college I had no clear idea of what it was I wanted to study and make a career out of. Luckily in August I decided that id like to become a psych nurse for the veterans administration. I feel like this career path fits me well beacuse I myself am a veteran! Needless to say im really quite excited about this adventure.

Even with all that excitement im clueless as where to start. Right now after 30 credits of easy courses and one biology course my gpa is at 3.6 and as I understand this is a fringe level gpa for nursing. With that in mind id expect it to go lower as the complexity of my courses increases.

With all that said I want to take my pre reqs at a school where theres a high probability of acceptance. Im worried that moving around would create stress and become expensive. Im limited to public schools unfortunately. So with that in mind can you guys give me an idea of what schools accept more applicants with lighter gpa requirements probably in the 3.3-3.5 range.

Something to consider I am a marine combat veteran im not sure if that has any weight. If schools weigh that type of experience please tell me which ones.

I do appreciate the guidance

Hello!

You can go to Texas BON's website and look up approved programs & their NCLEX passing rates. If you're in the Houston area, I would say UTH (Little bias). There's also UTMB, TWU & Prairie view a&m.

In addition to looking up approved programs on the TX BON website, you can also verify accreditation through CCNE or ACEN.

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

Don't just assume that you won't be able to make higher grades in your remaining pre-reqs... there's no reason you can't do very well if you put forth additional effort.

Taking you pre-requisites at the same school is unlikely to give you any advantage when it comes to their nursing program. Admission to the nursing program is a whole different 'thing' than admission to the school. Some private school programs may give 'extra credit' for current students, but that is not usually the case. There is also a great deal of emphasis placed on entrance tests - these requirements should be listed in the program admission information.

You didn't mention this, but I think you should leverage your status .... there are many Texas programs that DO give preference to military veterans. UTHSC - San Antonio is extremely 'vet friendly'. This could be a real advantage for you.

THANK YOU for your military service! Wishing you the absolute best on your nursing education journey.

I'd like to thank everyone for your responses. They have been extremly informative and helpful in my search!
