Houston RN pay?

U.S.A. Texas

Hi, y'all!

I'm planning to relocate to Houston or Conroe this coming year. Does anyone know how much money RNs generally make? Thanks! :D

How big the pay differential between RN and BSN?

Usually, nobody cares if you have a BSN. They look for experience and skill. There might be a difference in the medical center.

2 sixteens on the weekend, or the Baylor shift is not very common. It differs from hospital to hospital and floor to floor. You will have to ask individual HR's or hiring managers. Sometimes they promote these shifts, usually on difficult, fast moving floors.

I have this idea in my head--which may be silly--of doing baylor shifts and then getting my MSN during the week. Would love to hear some input from those who have worked through nursing grad school.

I have seen poeple half dead after back to back 16s. You need at least one day for recovery. Tests are usually on Mondays, so you may need to do probably one 16 on Saturdays and one regular on other days. It helps to recover if you get a days gap. Try and get a scholarship or graduate assisantship (assistantships don't pay much, though).

I went through and accelerated BSN and worked part-time. I though, never worked on the night of the test. Had to clamp down on every expense and learn some time-manangement.

Did you do your Accel. BSN at UT SON in Houston? Right now I'm kind of stuck on how I should go about things. I already have a B.S. in something else, and could finish the UT SON program in 1 year. But I ask myself, with the deluge of experienced nurses, will I be able to get a job when I come out?

Or, I could try to convince my boss at my present job to let me slice my vacation days up so that I can attend the UH Coleman ADN program. But just asking to do this could get me fired. Even if I do get to use my vacations days as I wish, the UH program would take 2 years + 1 year to upgrade my ADN to BSN.

If the economy were normal, I'd go for plan 1, to just make a clean break from my current profession and get working as a nurse within 1 year. But I got a feeling the economy will not be all right for quite some time.

Thanks for your input.

Nursing has nothing to do with economy. It has to do with supply & demand. Right now, demand in Houston is bad due to Ike nurse. Once they settle down, it will go right back up.

You will get hired (one hospital/city or another) even it not in the choicest place.

The program you have chosen UTHS is the most difficult to get into. Apply to all BAC2 programs in town (UTMB, TWU, Prairie View, UH Victoria Sugarland campus) and get into the first one that accepts you. Just make sure you have rent to pay, toilet paper, soap for a year and food for 3 months in the fridge. You won't even have time to cook.

If you go the ADN way, you can complete BS online at either TWU or UTMB.

Thanks for the advice. I've got alot of planning to do.

How many hours did you work part-time?

I worked at least one 12 hour shift a week. The trick is that I worked nights only and p.r.n. (as an LVN), so, I got paid pretty good money.

With your RN license, you could go agency and work less, earn more. Also, if you work with an agency like Premier, you get to work with only one system and not have to relearn systems for every assignment. You can buy healthcare insurance with your school if you are a full-time student.

Wow, you made it work all right.

BSN is a degree. RN is a license. An RN with an ADN is still an RN...and most employers see it as that.
