DFW area, Is this a fair pay for a RN with 4.5 yrs experience?

I just got a job offer from a busy dept in a Baylor hospital in Dallas. $27.5/hour for my 4.5 yrs experience. I I feel it is a low pay. What you think? I don't live in Dallas. I need inputs from locals. Thank you

Yes, that sounds about right for your years of experience.

Keep in mind that DFW is not exactly the highest-paying metro area for RNs due to the numerous nursing programs in the area that churn out new nurses into the job market every 6 months.

A new RN would start at $21.50 hourly in the Baylor hospital system, so $27.50 per hour sounds right on target for somebody with nearly 5 years of experience. I wish you the best of luck!

I think it's a little low. I got a job offer from THR a few months ago and was offered about $30.80 for 5.5yrs experience.

This is Baylor.Baylor may not pay well. I don't see THR has the opening I want right now. I am not sure if I want to accept the job. Pay is too low, comparing to what I get now.

THR does pay better than Baylor. I worked at Presbyterian Hospital Of Dallas around 5 years or so (about 10 yrs ago) as a full time float RN (I don't know if they still do, but when I left that hospital they still had that full time dept with benefiits, etc.), and the base pay for that position was $28.00 with applicable differentials (keep in mind this was 10 yrs ago). When I put in for that position I had telemetry, some ER, med-surg, and psych experience (had been an RN for 5-6 yrs then). I loved working at that hospital; made me an even well-rounded nurse (just had to move after I got married). Good luck.

Pay is about right for the area. Don't know if the area hospitals are doing it now; but, it was common to get a signing bonus to supplement the low pay in the DFW area. Used to be that the only way nurses could get a decent raise would be to job hop. Also, you will find night and weekend differentials that will add to the hourly rate. Before you turn the offer down, see if they are giving a sign on bonus and what the differentials would be.

If you are coming from another area of the country, it can be a real shocker to see the low pay rates here. The only thing I can probably say to console you is that there is no state income tax in Texas. And, you can supplement your pay by taking on agency work for rates in the high 30s to low 40s/ hr.

The baylor weekend differential is $6/hr, still the pay is very depressing. If THR pay well, I will give them a try.

I notice DWF living expenses is not high, but not low either. High property taxes overweigh the state income taxes saved on RN salary.

A recruiter from the Univ. of Oklahoma Medical Center came to our school a few days ago. The starting pay for new RNs is a whopping $18.65 per hour. The majority of LVNs in the DFW area are paid more than the RNs in Oklahoma.

I heard that the staff salaries in the South were generally bad; but, that's ridiculous.

I must be spoiled. Luckily, I found a place to work that pays me near what I made in the NE. Conditions are terrible; but, not enough to take a major pay cut, right now. Got to start preparing for the summer electric bill.

BTW, did you feel the earthquake today? ETA: Oooops, yesterday?

Do you mind me asking where you are coming from? I see you caught the property taxes-there are a lot of other hidden type of taxes and expenses here that does make the COL a bit high. But, I guess it is all relative in regards to where one is used to living.

Truthfully, I don't think that TRH would pay much more than Baylor.

I live in in the Southwest, housing price is about same as DWF area, pay is good. New grads make $26+/hr. Property tax is very low here. Working ondtion is good here. RN only have 4 patients for the most days. Med/surg RNs have 5 patients for the most days.

But summer here is too hot, and I don't like the desert.

I like DFW as it has four seasons, housing are not too expensive and schools are good.
