AE MSN at UT Austin Summer 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Anybody out there applying to the UT Austin AEMSN program for summer 2012? Haven't seen any posts about our group of hopefuls yet.

Funny two other Austin area people on here responding. I'm sure Scott leaving does make it a little confusing there--he's who I've spoken with numerous times over the last couple of years. Have y'all finished all of your prereq's? I'm taking the last three this semester, and the accelerated schedule has me a little nervous. I need those grades added into my GPA--I'm a much better student this time around. My BA is in Biology/Psychology, from 1995.

I'm also curious if anyone is working a parallel pathway (read: backup plan) towards an advanced nursing degree. I'm optimistic about UT AEMSN, and it's the best program for me for a bunch of reasons (respected program, excellent timeline, opportunity to do clinicals locally, etc.). Just curious if anyone (especially the locals) have explored any program that comes close to matching UT's.

I am finishing my last prereq class now. I also have a degree in Biology from years ago. At this point in my life, I think the masters program UT offers is the best for me, too. Being a tad bit more experienced with life, makes me want to go for it (translation - older-hahaha). I know Texas Tech, A & M, and others also offer an accelerated BSN program. Then add in the masters, and that's another entire application process, school, time, etc.

The big problem is, at least for me, when you begin to look at the prerequisites for each program, they vary so much. I am out of district for ACC which stinks, and so each prereq class costs $800-1000+ plus books which is crazy. I really really really really really hope I get in at UT!

Also, I want the option to teach in the end. We can do that with an MSN, but not with a BSN as far as I know.

Keep in touch

Hi everyone -

I live in Austin (east side....maybe near you, eastsider!). I'm on my last prereq this semester - pharmacology, which I'm taking at ACC. Hoping to get into the Adult Health CNS. I've been a social worker for a long time and have a master's degree in that field.

The UT program seems really good in a lot of ways; however my ideal route would be directly to (non-psych) NP, which isn't an option. Doing the Adult Health program and going afterward for a post-MSN certificate would take more time, but also give me more experience, and it would cost a lot less than some of the private schools with more direct programs. I'm older too (41) and there are so many more compromises and complications in going back to school at this age! I love Austin and want to stay here....yet I don't think Austin hospitals are all that great....yet I think UT is a really good school....yet my family is elsewhere....etc.

I applied to three other direct-entry programs in different parts of the country - that's my plan B. They're all really competitive so I'm hoping to get accepted to at least one! I looked into the accelerated BSN programs near Austin, but it's not a very appealing option to me....first of all, I know I want to be in advanced practice, and secondly I would have to take TX history/government, US history/government, a performing arts course, and a lot of other non-nursing classes to get a TX BSN. I'd rather put the effort into the MSN route. I agree with you, acbs - it's maddening how much the preqs vary. For goodness' sakes, Yale's grad school doesn't require half the coursework that Texas Tech wants!

Good to meet everyone. I hope we all get in! I have no idea what the timeline is, and I had no idea Scott was gone. I'm sticking with blissful ignorance until I hear something official :)

The more I read here and on the UT website the more I get stressed out. (fingers crossed...way crossed)

So does anyone have any idea what the interview will be like? Possible questions...anything..Buehler?

Hey! I'm new to this thread, also waiting to hear back for AE MSN!!

Have been trying to not think about how long the wait is, and just put it at the back of my mind until I hear something … but couldn’t resist looking for a thread like this one!!

I agree about the other BSN programs – the classes that you have to take are ridiculous, especially if you already have a bachelor’s degree. And I wasn’t thrilled about the distance-learning component of a lot of those.

When I talked to Scott about the interviews, he said it varies whether they do panel, individual, etc. When I read some of the posts from people who applied a year or two ago, it sounded like most of their interviews were panel … good luck to everyone! Fingers crossed we’ll get to hear news sooner rather than later!

Oh, and I'm in Austin too!

Hey, I also applied to this program for Summer 2012. I'm glad i could find people who are in the same boat as me. I wasn't nervous at first but now I am. Does anyone know what the interview process is like? what are some possible questions? I need to start preparing.

Hey everyone - let's make a deal. The first to hear anything...please post it here for the rest of us! I feel like we should have heard something by now, am I being impatient?! hahahha Or maybe they will forget about all of those time consuming interviews and just let us in. (Not likely.)

I wish I knew more about this year's numbers and if they compare to previous years. You can look up on their site information such as GRE scores, GPAs, etc. for all of the students who applied, who got offered a spot, and who accepted. I can't find how many in each concentration area (adult health, CNS, maternity, etc.) but probably because those vary and have changed even since last year, right?

For those of you who have recently added to our group, what concentration area did you pick? Are you done with all of your prerequisites? I'm not one to write on these types of message boards (never have) but it is fun to know we are all waiting together!

Have a great week!

did everyone receive Jennifer's email.

admissions will be in late Feb, while interviews will be in Dec/Jan. >.

Yeah. Same timeline as last year I guess. At least we know for sure now haha

Did anyone notice that there were only 117 people that Jennifer emailed? I was hoping that maybe this means that the number of people applying this year went down … I guess it could also just mean that there were a ton of people and she had to send two emails!!

I’m applying for child health role specialty, emphasis in teaching. I’m taking my last two pre-requisites next semester at ACC (Human Growth & Development and genetics).

Speaking of, does anyone know if there’s a big difference between “genetics” and “molecular and cellular biology”? They both qualify for the genetics pre-req, couldn’t really tell what the difference was from the course descriptions.

I normally hate January/February because they’re the coldest and darkest months here … but now I can’t wait! Agh!

I also noticed the 117. Hhmmmmm. Now if we can only know the numbers they are willing to accept for each concentration...

Yes, the waiting is still going to be driving me crazy, but not as much now that we have a date in mind.

Claireizzle - you may want to check on this - I heard that General Biology can count as the Genetics prerequisite. I have both, and so may not have paid close enough attention to this detail, but check on it! You may not have to take Genetics after all if you already have Biology! :o)

Let's keep our fingers crossed everyone, and keep in touch!

Hi all,

I also applied this year, for Child Health emphasis on teaching. I haven't applied anywhere else so far so I'm very nervous. I'm finishing up my prereqs at ACC, but I still have pharmacology, physiology, and human development next semester so I have a ways to go. I also live in Austin...Eastside. If I don't get in I will be very disappointed:( So nervous!! *crosses fingers*
