ACC Spring 2014 Hopefuls...........

U.S.A. Texas

Anyone else out there? Happy to have gotten my petition to Nursing Skills this past week. Excited and nervous!

I was accepted last semester on my 2nd cycle. I had a 62.41...I had to defer, expecting a baby any day now. (Unplanned, obviously! ;)) because I deferred I never received my rank, so I can't say about last semester.

So I reapplied for this cycle, accepted at 67.41. Will update ranking number when I get it. But my rank is skewed obviously being that I deferred last semester.

My first app cycle was 53.8, was allowed to take skills course, and that course plus my 2nd app cycle is how I was accepted at 62.41.

I do have 2 Bs, all my other co/pre-requisites are A's. Hesi was a 10.

Anybody have any tips on uniforms/ patches? Where to get them sewn on, etc?

Is anyone up for a skills refresher when they open the labs up?

Who is taking their CPR class? Where?

And, lastly, uninsured students, what's your plan for the physical? :/ I hope that isn't going to be crazy expensive.

ranking emails should be coming out this week.

At the orientation they will have some previously worn scrubs that are available for sale. I believe they already have the patches on them. If not, I will sew them on myself.

I think that you might be able to go to one of the places similar to ProMed and get a physical done for a reasonable price. You can always call around first to get the best price.

I'm waiting until my skills class is over in October before taking cpr, too much going on right now...

I would love to meet up with people at the EVC before our January class to brush up on our skills for the Mastery!

Hey guys, congrats on getting accepted into the program, I am in Level 3 at CEC, saw this thread and just wanted to give some pointers...

You can get your patches and uniforms from Total Uniforms, there is one on Ben White and the other is right near Seton Main. The patches are $5 and they will sew them on for $1. They also will have used scrubs at orientation that will have the patches sewn on.

As far as the physical goes, I have always gone to ProMed. When I got mine, it was around $60 for the physical and the Tb test- just make sure they know you are an ACC student, that's the health sciences discount. You'll likely need a two step Tb test, so you'll have to pay full price for the second one, but it's still a really great deal.

I've always gotten my CPR certification through ACC CE. They are usually held at the Highland Business Center. Reasonably priced and have lots of different times to fit your schedule.

Also, I highly recommend the CEC for campus location. It is really neat being downtown and in a hospital for classes. We have really great skills labs that has lots of equipment and kits so you don't have to mess up yours. Having previously been at the EVC campus for the LVN program this is a REALLY great advantage.... it's really hard to try and practice opening a sterile kit when it's been opened a million times and you may have lost pieces. We also have a huge library made specifically for health sciences, lots of nursing related books that you can check out and NO printing limit, it is also open 24 hours. We also get to see and occasionally mingle with medical students and other Nursing students (Concordia and Texas Tech usually) so that's a unique experience. I've also really enjoyed every single teacher we have had thus far and from what I have been told, we have gotten a few unique experiences since we are right at Brack that other campuses don't get. I live south and it takes me about 15 - 20 minutes to get to campus on any given morning.

Anyway goodluck, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have. :)

I'm in skills now, but no acceptance letter!!! I'm so sad!!! Good luck to all of you!!

Texaslvn: thank you!!! Super helpful post!

I picked rrc as first choice, I will have a newborn and I live in rr too. I wish I could do CEC.

Thank you, texaslvn12! And congratulations on achieving level 3--can't wait until I can say the same.

Here's my main question: Does having CEC as your home campus mean that your clinical sites are nearby?

CEC is my first choice campus. I should know by 10/16 if I got it. According to my acceptance letter, campus placements are first come, first served, so I have high hopes (I think I sent my confirmation email about 9 minutes after acceptances were emailed out, haha).

I have heard nothing but positive experiences at CEC. Plus, I live in central Austin. It makes the most sense for me to attend that campus if possible.

@Jus3--You might hear something in the second round of acceptance letters! I was halfway through skills when Fall 2013 letters were sent out and I BARELY missed the cutoff for admission (it was my first application cycle). I got my acceptance for Spring 2014 on 09/25. Don't give up hope!

Clinical sites are completely random and from what I understand, do not coincide with campus placement. For instance, I live south and my level 2 clincals were at Seton Northwest, and we shared this clinical site with other level 2 students from HYB and RRC. Conversely, I had other students in my class live very close to Seton NW and had their clinicals at Seton Hays... which is obviously very, very far south.... other students had clinicals at St David's Main, which is very close to CEC.

I'm not sure how they decide clinical groups, I think it is picked randomly because they cannot accommodate everyone's proximity. Overall, you really have no say in your clinical sites, but they are pretty much set to coordinate to a specific instructor. This is an advantage as they will know the facility and staff there. Generally they will not let you trade clinical sites unless it is an unavoidable situation that you have no other way around.

I really don't mind having my clinicals further away because generally the times you are arriving and leaving, traffic is usually not as much of an issue. It will be hardest in level 1 and the beginning of level 2 because you are going up to the hospital the night before to get your assignment, so that is a little extra driving time. I'd say most people have had a clinical site out of the way of where they live, so it's something we all deal with.

I got my acceptance letter today!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm on cloud nine!!!! I haven't stopped smiling all evening. My first choice campus is RRC & 2nd choice is CEC. I'm really hoping to get RRC though!!

@Jena5111, you were right!! Thanks for the encouraging words. I'm so excited!!

Hey guys!

Anyone received their "Next Steps" letter? I responded to my acceptance letter on September 26th, and they said we'd be receiving another e-mail by the 16th. Well, today is the 16th, and no e-mail yet! I just tried to call the office, but got no answer. Left a message.

I'm so anxious to find out about my campus! I put down CEC as my first choice, EVC as my second.

In my third week of skills now and not enjoying it much:( The teachers are REALLY disorganized and not much help at all. I think I am doing all right in it, though. Will have my first written test on Friday, so we'll see!

Not yet........I keep checking my email. I know that, in my class, we had our final for Nursing Skills last night so I'm sure they have to evaluate who passed and who failed still before they send anything. ? Just my guess.

Can't be that in my case. I just started skills (I'm in the 2nd 10 week session). Still checking every 10 minutes!
