Just Took The dreaded TEAS test

Nursing Students TEAS

Published

Okay so I took the teas test Saturday morning...gosh it was a long test...by the time we got to the English grammar part i just wanted to get out of there.... im still waiting on my results...... i took version 5 the paper version......does anyone know how long it takes for the results to show on your ati account?...also when they post the score do you get an e-mail notification right away?....

i thought i was ready since i bought the manual about 8 weeks ago and started to go through it right away made flash cards note cards, and started memorizing concepts and revisiting old ones i had learned.... i even took the last 2 practice tests at the end of the book and missed only 1 or 2 questions from each section.......thats kind of signaled me into thinking i was ready to take the test.........not at all the case...

I am a math person so i wasn't too worried about the math part but i revisited all the concepts anyways......i thought the actual teas was much easier than the ati manual..i had like 15 minutes of extra time..... too bad they dont let you go back sections.....but that's about the only thing that was easier..

i thought the science was completely written by a different company all together..... even though i had practiced and went over all the concepts mentioned in the ati book ..........even as far as expanding more upon the concepts it had mentioned...for example the mitosis and meiosis steps, differences,.....human anatomy... lots of chemistry( i was a chemistry major so i have taken chemistry beyond pre reqs for nursing)..... i felt l was not prepared........

the science part was definitely not at all like the manual....i am actually kind of mad now at ati..,.for kind of attempting to fool me.....1)into thinking i had to know things that i wouldn't even have one question of like lots of human anatomy.......and 2) for not providing a clear list and topics and concepts necessary for preparing for the TEAS.....3) for having so many mistakes in the books i had to contact them and they said there was 3 page correction up on the ati website for the book

seriously who writes this test??or should i say the manual? or are they separate entities?do they know each other or at least keep in contact??.......are they just doing that so that you take a second time test meaning more MONEY for them...................................

okay enough of me complaining....

i need some advice from those of you who got 90% and above on the test...what is your secret? how did you study for the test?? the program im trying to get into is extremely competitive and i need to score above 90% to even be considered!!!! so please share your study secrets..........

thanks in advance

ps (although i don't have my test score yet i know its not that hot since i glanced over the science section and could barely answer the first 5 questions i panicked and probably did worse than i would normally i will let you guys know how i did once it posts)

I've asked it many times before...how did this TEAS test explode into some big thing? When I took it a few years ago we had no idea we even had to take it the first week of school. They told us it was some review thing or whatever...it was simple 7th and 8th grade math, english, and science. No need to have all these study guides and be nervous, come on now.

Agree with previous posters - if this test was difficult for you, then you might want to reconsider nursing altogether.

How very supportive. I don't think one's anxiety over an entrance exam is an indicator that they won't be able to cut nursing school. The time limits and pressure to get a competitive score can really throw you off your game. For most people, the TEAS is the final step after several semesters of hard work that can make or break your chance to get into the program you've worked your ass off for. No pressure there! lol

I'm not saying that nursing school is going to be easy by any stretch- but it's a step by step process and for applicants, the one focus is the one in front of you- getting accepted. You revamp your game once that happens and begin preparing for the fun of nursing school exams.

I agree with SnMrsSmiley. Our school doesn't require it for admission, but we just took it yesterday during orientation to identify our weak areas before classes begin. I didn't study at all and got a 91%. Most of the questions are pretty straightforward. There is a lot of anatomy and biology in the science section, but nothing that is tricky or obscure - if you've taken high school biology or an anatomy class, it's not too difficult in that respect.

I think the trick is not to panic or over-think it. Studying is great, but once you sit down at the test, just relax. You mentioned that you kind of glossed over science based on the first five questions. I have the same problem with math sometimes - once I finished the math section, I was pretty tapped out. But you just take a deep breath and focus anyway. Do your best and you'll probably surprise yourself with how well you do. :)

how come no one answers my question about the type of chemistry on the exam??

Agree with previous posters - if this test was difficult for you, then you might want to reconsider nursing altogether. Exams in nursing school will be the hardest you have ever taken - no joke. And you have to get at least a 78%, anything less is failure. There will be chemistry, pharmacology, and pathophysiology used on a daily basis. Don't buy the lousy TEAS book - it's probably in your school's library. I did not study for TEAS at all, was the first to finish, and got in the 85th percentile. You will all be fine - don't worry. :lol2:

(Trying not to be critical)... The original poster is attempting to do MUCH better on this test than you. A 90% overall score is in the 99th percentile. This is hard - you can miss about 1-2 questions per section at most. I don't even know what score lands in the 85th percentile - definitely lower than the scores required by many schools. To debase the OP, who is looking for a higher level of excellence, is unnecessary.

OP - I agree, the science portion was hard. Keep in mind that there are quite a few (15%) "trial" questions on the science portion of the test - questions that do not count towards your score. Hopefully the questions that really got you fall into that category. I took the computer based test, and got a score immediately. Not sure, but I remember hearing somewhere that written test scores would be posted within 48hrs.

AddisonLawrence - re: Chemistry questions - My test had me balance some reactions, understanding and neutralization of bases and acids, quite a few radioactive decay questions that were very easy to figure out even though I hadn't had that portion of chemistry yet, general knowledge (electrons, protons, neutrons), valence electrons, and I'm sure some other stuff I have forgotten. Search the boards for TEAS Chemistry, and I bet you'll find the rest.

FABULOUS. I just bought my study manual and of course it's ati. :uhoh3: Sounds like this manual has a lot of fans. NOT. I bet you did better than you think! :p

For all of the people having problems with English and grammar: Is English your native language? I'm just curious, because I've always done well in English and grammar, didn't need to review that or study it for these preadmission tests. If you are having loads of trouble with it, maybe try getting a GED English review book to study from. That worked for me for Math, to warm up my pen-and-pencil math skills after years of using computers and calculators to do the gruntwork. The GED English book probably gives you a lot more practice than the nursing preexam study guides do.

I never took the TEAS, but I took the HESI A2 and the NLN PAX. Those tests are very similar to each other. Here's what I used to study:

the ATI HESI A2 study guide

the McGraw Hill nursing preadmission exam guide (there's a brand new edition)

Cliff's Notes nursing preadmission exam book

Cliff's Notes general biology guide, because I never took any biology except A&P

There's are Cliff's books for A&P. I had already taken college A&P I & II and microbiology before I took any RN preadmission exams. Chemistry, I took many years ago in college. Ditto for physics.

I agree! Way to be encouraging. From what I know, the TEAS is newly required by many schools today. Whenever I go to the hospital or speak to the nurse and explain to them the TEAS, they look at me like *****:confused: They have no clue what I am talking about--at least where I live, the TEAS is a new requirement. It used to be a placement test. That's all. It doens't determine your status on whether you can be admitted or not.

The pressure that this test will either allow you to become what you dream of or having to change your major/career to something you desperately don't want to settle for is nerve racking.

OP

i live in florida and the teas test just came around i think a year ago last year schools started using the teas as a way to weed out students thats considering nursing school which is a good and a bad thing,i taken it already and preparing to take it again but i'm going to wait until i have at least studied a month .i took it 2/3/12.for some people math and science was their weakness in math i scored a 93.3% science 84%-which at my school we only needed a 53% lol huh,reading:76% and english:80%

for my school teas requirements:

reading:76%

math:75%

science:53%

english:70%

can anyone give me some pointers to score maybe 15 pointer higher then what i am scoring or anything that you have noticed about the teas test.

amwpillai- what did you do,how did you study.

please help everyone!! email me:[email protected] thanks!

I have absolutely no worries about the reading/writing portions. I am an English major. No worries. Science and Math, however, I am worried. Only because I have been out of high school for over 15 years and the only math or science courses I was required to take during my undergraduate work was basic/intro type stuff. So yes, I am nervous because even basic equations are no longer "fresh" in my mind. But apparently, since it's anyone's guess as to what is going to be on the darn test, buying a manual for 60-80 bucks may not even help me at all.
