1460 on GRE and not accepted?

Nursing Students SRNA

Hello,

This is my first time posting so here is a little background...

My husband works at a level 1 trauma hospital in the neuro trauma ICU unit. He has worked there for 1 1/2 years. BSN gpa is 3.5. Before that he had a wonderful 6 years working as a polysomnograph technologist doing sleep studies. He gained a wealth of knowledge in upper airway management during those six years.

My husband received a 1460 on the gre. Yes, my husband is smart :) With such a good gre score we decided that it was time to go ahead and apply to a few nurse anesthesia schools. We heard back from a school in FL that they were missing a peice of info from his nursing school. They said as soon as they received it then the application would be complete. We mailed the missing info yesterday and to our surprise received a letter in the mail from this FL school saying that my husband was not accepted.

My poor husband is so bumbed...so am I :( I guess we are confused....didn't even get an interview? The application wasn't even complete yet!?

He's been trying to get a hold of the program director but with no luck.

Any insight on this matter?

btw...I am my husband's #1fan...we work as a team. :)

My best guess would be that they denied him due to the missing information. If you can explain that he indeed has whatever the missing information was and that the rejection letter and what your were sending crossed in the mail they may reconsider. The only way you'll know is if you ask. Maybe try calling admissions if you can't get through to the program director. Otherwise I say let the FLA school go, with his experience and GRE score he is bound to get in somewhere.

I don't know what to tell you, except that I know that anesthesia programs are really, really competitive, everywhere. Many, many excellent candidates get turned down for a variety of reasons. Really smart nurses I know have applied to multiple schools and have gotten rejection letters. Sometimes they get interviews and then get rejection letters, and sometimes they don't get interviewed. Several people I know that really have a desire to go to anesthesia school apply multiple years in a row. I know people that have only gotten in on the 3rd year of applying, some, the 2nd year. I guess from my own observations and talking to my friends that have been rejected (and later, were admitted), if you are persistent and find out from the schools specifically what was lacking in your application package and fix it, they look more favorably on you the second go-around. So yeah, I think he is on the right track with trying to get in touch with the program director.

A lot of schools want to see that you know what anesthesia is all about and are looking at your personal statements, etc. to see if you have made an effort to shadow an anesthetist. I guess I would throw that out there as a potential recommendation.

I'm just an ICU nurse as well, and these are just my observations. I'm not interested in anesthesia and have never applied myself. Hopefully you will get other replies to this post from CRNAs/SRNAs to see what happened with them.

Rejection never feels good. Keep trying. You never know what kind of criteria these schools look at, some of which are beyond his control, so don't take it personally. Just keep working on it, and he'll get accepted eventually. Good luck to the both of you.

Did he miss the application deadline? Could that explain it?

Apply to more schools and hand deliver evrything to those schools most desired. He'll get in somewhere.

GRE scores alone do not a good graduate candidate make.

That is unusual. Had the application deadline already passed? I know when I was applying to UF (for ABSN not a CRNA program) they called me after the deadline had passed telling me they were missing a letter of rec. The admissions office called me at least three times about this, wanting to make sure all applications were ready before they started reviewing them. About a month later I got my acceptance letter. I would assume there was a mistake in sending the letter if you had just heard from them recently. If after you talk to them and they tell you the rejection is real see if you can speak to an admissions counselor on why you were not accepted. You should consider the appeals process.

How many schools did he apply to? There are several factors that deal with getting accepted to CRNA school, and one can't get acceptance on just the basis of having a great GRE. With that being said, don't give up! Apply to more schools! There are so many and you have to be willing to relocate if necessary. Good Luck!

Hard to tell... GPA might have been too low, though a 3.5 is generally quite good... were there deadlines you were pushing? Really, the only person who'll be able to answer this is the program director.

A lot of schools ask for a GRE score but don't weigh it too heavily, much to the relief of most applicants and the dismay of those of us who do really well on it. ;) My score was about the same as your husband's, but my ABSN program barely considered it (and dropped it for the class after ours). I was glad to be accepted anyways, especially since my undergrad GPA was low (a 3.3, yikes) but I was definitely a little selfishly annoyed that I did so well on that test and they hardly cared. :p I did quite a bit of research a while back into CRNA programs and got the impression that GRE scores aren't usually that big of a deal, compared to the other factors they look at. But I could be wrong.

Could your husband appeal the decision? I had no idea that was ever possible, but one of the schools I applied to (in FL no less) denied me for not having my prereqs done but bizarrely offered me the opportunity to appeal their decision...

When was the cutoff date for the application period? Sounds like the time ran out for him to get his information in before the decision was made. Maybe they would have taken him if the information they were looking for was already available. So, by them asking for further info., maybe they were getting his application complete for the next application period. I know the programs I have applied for will not accept your application if it is not complete. Even though he was not aware of it at the time, he now has all the information turned in that they require. He needs to let them know to put his application materials in the upcoming application period. Best of luck in the future.

Thank you all for your imput, incouragement, and suggestions! They are well received and have made me more hopeful. The FL school does not have a deadline which is why my husband and I are confused, but you guys are right....my husband will definitely call and appeal (or at least try to). We won't give up nor has that ever been an option...however many years it might take! We applied to a school in MO as well and probably won't hear back from them until Aug.

Thanks again :)
