Thoughts on going for NP with 2 young kiddos?

Hello all you awesome allnurse people! I sooooooooo want to go back to school, most likely on the path to getting my NP. The only thing is I can still remember how hard it was when my kids were 2 and 3 yrs old while I attended LPN school. More than anything I MISSED THEM SO MUCH!

I don't have a specific question really. I just hope to hear from any nurses that went to school while having a young child/ren and how your experience was. Share your thoughts with me on anything you felt during that time or if your going through it right now. Please I need to hear from all the moms/dads/caregivers who succeeded in school while parenting!!! I'm just so nervous to make that step.

My kids were 6 and 4 when I started NNP school - my son went to school every day and my daughter went to preschool 3 days/week so I did have time to get school work done. I worked as an RN on the weekends (just per diem so I wasn't committed to a lot of shifts). The hardest for me was just juggling clinicals and days when I wanted to stay longer for procedures, etc. My husband works very long hours and I couldn't have done it without my mom helping. Anything is possible, you just have to be focused and efficient.

I'm starting FNP school in March with a 4 month old and 2 1/2 yr old. My plan is to not work and my oldest is in preschool all day, 2x a week. I'm going to stay very organized and remain flexible with my schedule and if I need to find a sitter for my youngest or add a 3rd preschool day for my oldest, I definitely will. I want to study when they aren't home/sleeping and be totally on when they are awake. I also realize this may be harder than it sounds, so again, I'm remaining very flexible and I have a very supportive husband who will be available on the weekends if I need to cram. Good luck!

I just started a FNP program this fall, my kiddos are 5 and 3 so they are in kindergarten and preschool during the day. I am doing the program part-time because that is all I can manage. Honestly, the program is not easy but I have to plan my time well and my hubby and family will watch the kids so that I can study. I also work full-time nights. Its tough but doable, lots of women did it before me and many will after. My plan...I take it one day at a time...that is all anyone can do.

I'm glad to hear that. I have decided for sure I'm going for it. I reached out to the program I'm interested in, I believe I'll start in Feb. I'll be working, school part time and enlisting the extra support of hubby and mom lol. Thanks for your comment and I wish you all the best as well!

I'm so excited to hear from alot of women who are on similar paths, with kids at a similar age. It's such a relief. I feel so much more confident and at peace about this decision. Thanks so much for your input and good luck to you too!

I just applied for NP with a 3yo and a 1yo. I did nursing school pregnant and with a toddler! It was hard but with the right support system (daycare, emergency care people, etc) it was very doable.
