Needing encouragement, continue with school?

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

Hi,

So I finished my first year of adult/geriatric primary care NP school and am now having second thoughts about continuing on in August. I have two more years (part-time) and will take pathophysiology in the fall but I'm not sure if I should finish school and figure out what to do with my master's degree later or stop now and see if this is the right degree for me. I don't know if I want to be a primary care provider in an outpatient setting. Did I chose this degree because I didn't want to do the administration or education track winding up in my program by default?

I'm 1/3 of the way through... continue on? What are some alternative things I can do with my adult np degree? Maybe home health? palliative care? any advice is greatly appreciated!!

My answer may seem silly but I would say that if you have incurred any debt for this program then you need to finish. If not then do what you feel is best.

How many NPs have you shadowed?

Conquered- I am paying out-of-pocket so I have no debt. unfortunately, because I am working part-time, my employer does not offer tuition reimbursement.

BostonFNP- to be honest, I have not shadowed a np.

What made you want to pursue becoming a FNP in the first place?

Specializes in Research, neurology.

I'm in my clinical now of Adult Gero primary care np program...and in the same boat as you. I had many second thoughts before I started clinical in May but thought I was too far in to quit completely and only had the 1 yr of clinical left. Now I had to go part-time and balancing work, clinical, home and bills is overwhelming. Hoping it gets easier to manage everything. No student loan debt for me either. I'm on the 5 yr plan and just took one class at a time sometimes taking semesters off--- not sure that I should have continued but kept thinking that I would regret not finishing. I thought about going into the nurse educator track at the last minute but that would have meant 6 more classes (or 2 more years if doing one class per semester!). Just 10 months left. No advice for you but just wanted to commiserate. Wish you best of luck in whatever you decide!!
