Is grad school really this hard to get into?

Greetings!

Soooo after Georgetown kept haunting me to apply, I ended up not getting accepted. Waiting on Univ of Cincinnati (online) acceptance. I never knew graduate school would be this hard to get into. I never had issues with applying to a school I wanted and getting accepted. Feeling down, and needing a little encouragement.

Hi MSTXnurse!

I was accepted for the FNP specialty and will be starting Summer 2013. I have a bit more of a countdown, but still very nervous and excited at the same time.

Do know anything about the Texas BON not accepting out-of-state nurse practitioner programs where you set-up your own clinical sites? I read in another thread, about Walden FNP, that someone contacted them and they said that clinical sites must be approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in order to sit for the APN boards. I looked through the Texas BON laws and didn't really see anything like that, except for what looked like for RN-BSN and LVN programs. I was under the impression that UC was approved for the state of Texas since it's not on their restricted state list.

You will be starting ahead of me, so would love to hear about your experience as you go along! Thanks!

Congrats on getting accepted for the Summer term:-)

I haven't gotten my call yet. However when I do will post it here and email you as well

Hello, Got my call today. Yaunne will call me in about 2 weeks. I haven't heard anything further. I am under the impression that all is well. I know a Pediatric NP in MS who completed the program, no reported problem. I will definitely contact TBON myself and see what they say. I know people who are willing to precept when the time comes and they have precepted through TX schools. Hopefully we all can be buddies through this. Look forward to PM or talking to UC future NP students soon. Take care. Good luck.

Spoke with staff member at TBON of nursing. She said as long as school is accredited and recognized by the board of nursing where the school is located (Ohio Board of Nursing), then TBON is okay with it.

Thanks MSTXnurse for finding that out! Would love to be UC buddies with all of you that are attending and keep in touch. If anyone manages to get the book list, I would love to see what's on it. Not sure if it would change for Summer 2013, but I'm kind of wondering how I can get a head start on some of the biostats and patho material. I'm kind of wondering if we should start a new University of Cincinnati thread to put information into, since this one is kind of ambiguous.

Hey everyone!

Ok so I received my call this week. I have already registered for classes, ordered my books and my books are here! I know we have a black board as well for communication but if you are interested in a FB page please send me your email and I will add you to the group that will be for us. Congrats to everyone that has made it to grad school thus far! We have a month left until school!!!!

Hi itsnowbegun,

I can't receive private messages yet (not enough posts) but I wanted to ask if you could PM me some details about the call when you get time, so I'll know what to expect when I start in the Summer. Also, would you mind sending the book list in the message, so I can get an idea of what books will be needed? Thanks so much, and look forward to keeping in touch with you to find out more about how things go. It's pretty exciting to be starting soon at such a great school with such great people :)

I really think that the essays and work experience applicants bring to the table have as much sway in the acceptance process as a 4.0 GPA has, maybe more. I will be in my early 50's when I start FNP and I have not felt my age is a deterent at all.

Hello, new to this site and reading about Frontier. I'm in my 50s and applied to Frontier and wasn't accepted. Like Jory, I think they have a particular type of student in mind, and that GPA, essays, and experience aren't the keys. I have 28 years in EMS, 17 in nursing, I'm an ACLS Instructor and they rejected me. No waitlist, nothing. I don't see age having anything to do with it, but maybe they do. I had a 3.1 GPA, good essays, excellent references, I can't figure out why they rejected me. I was upset at first, but I'm moving on to Plan B.

With a 3.1 GPA did you take the GRE or the MAT? If not, your GPA would not have met their cut off. Good luck to you - I did not put all my faith in Frontier either - I also applied to several local schools in Maine.

Honestly, I think there are somethings like experience that put individuals ahead. But...first you have to come to the table with basics being where they need to be. Ill be honest...3.1 GPA isn't something that would stand out. That might what got you cut and they may not have looked beyond that. I had a 3.7+ and was actually concerned when I applied to grad school. Since a 3.0 is the lowest acceptable grade in my grad program I could see them not being okay with 3.1 GPA for an undergrad.

I had a borderline GPA and applied to Frontier, Ball State, and Austin Peay (Regents). I have worked at Vanderbilt for 2 years on a surgical med/surg floor. I had a 3.0 in my ASN program and then I did an online (Ohio University) BSN program and had a 3.7. I was turned down by Frontier and Ball State but did get into the FNP program at Austin Peay. Now I just hope I can make it through the next 3 years!

PS - I am from Cincinnati and went to UC for some of my undergrad. I also have a few friends doing their Adult NP there and they like it!

Just wondering what were your GPA's when you got accepted in UC's program. I applied for Summer 2013, and I hate the wait game.....
