What dumb things have teachers / staff said to you?

I brought some sports physicals to my Athletic Director's attention today. Now mind you, these are usually given to me days after the sport actually starts and only with my asking on several occasions. 2 of them said that the student had to have additional medical evaluation before they could be cleared to play.

He looked at me and said.........oh, I didn't know about those. Am I supposed to look at those forms?

My response: well, the only way of knowing if they are cleared is to look at the results.

His response (very defensively): Well, I am not a medical professional. How would I know what to do?

My reponse: All you have to do is read and it tells you cleared/ not cleared. (Did not know you had to have a nursing degree to read a form).

How much time to you have? I hear things all the time that make me say, "Huh?" Like the teacher who sent a student with a note that said "she can't sit still, I think she has a UTI or something."

The child had badly infected 2nd degree burns on both feet! No wonder she couldn't sit still.:bugeyes: If the teacher had only asked the student what was wrong, she would have told her her feet hurt (she's an 8th grader.) Heck, as soon as she took off her shoes I knew what the problem was!

Or maybe its the coach who brought me a student who complained of severe pain in his shoulder. I could tell by looking at it that the shoulder was either dislocated or fractured. Not to be out-done, the coach whipped that boy around and said,"Here, I'll put it back in place" and tried to manipulate the shoulder with a quick pop. I had to literally throw my (ample) body between the coach and the student to stop him! (and that story went straight to the principal, I might add)

Or maybe its the vice principal who, after I gave the command to call 911 for a child having a severe asthma attack, prissed down the the clinic to ask if that was really necessary...lets see, he's blue, he has no air exchange, pulse is thready, he can't speak. Yup, better call 911, you moron! (actually what I said to her was more like "If I told you to call 911, I mean call 911 and don't second guess me on that ever again!:banghead:")

Ahhh, the joys of school nursing...

I can't believe I came across this question! I have been just floored at some of the things I see and hear from educators. Do ya'll have needy teachers????? I have several but the last situation tops them all..okay.. This teacher came into my office with bad dry feet. One of them had a crack that was sore. I gave her several recommendations and told her to apply a bandaid with TAO on the sore spot while she was at work because she was wearing flip-flops.. She came stood by me and held her foot up for me to put it on for her!!!!! okay..I'm surprised because first of all I would never take that problem to a co-worker and 2nd..I can put a bandaid on my own foot..surprised but oh-well. The next 4 mornings she comes in and holds her foot up for me to take care of!!!!!! Thank goodness it healed because I was about to say something that may have not been so nice...Is it just me or is this extremely needy???????

Needy teachers? hahahahahaha :D I have one who actually had me type up a letter stating that she was "allowed" to eat a snack at her desk when she has symptoms of hypoglycemia(she has diabetes.) Not because administration was giving her a hard time--they were fine with her testing and snacks. Nooo, because the 11yr olds in her class "wouldn't allow it." WTH?

I have one teacher who goes through spells of wanting her BP checked every day. She doesn't have hypertension, but she is very skittish--just let the news come out with the "disease of the week" and she's there.

But the topper was the teacher that told me she was constipated and did I have a suppository I could put in to make her go? :smackingf Would you even think to tell your collegues about your irregularity, let alone request such a personal remedy? I just stood there with my mouth hanging open, thinking "I have officially heard it all now."

honestly, i think the staff comes to us with everything from fever blister's to hemerhoids because we are free in house health care.

they feel entitled to come to us for everything. now, while they come to us for everything, they also second guess us at every turn...go figure ! :no:

Thanks for the wonderful posts. I am just amazed at teachers.

They expect their students to read everything and follow directions - yet, they do not practice what they preach!!!

I was accused a few days of taking lunch. Now, this is my third year at my school and I have closed the clinic and had lunch in the lounge maybe 4-5 times max. Most of the time I eat lunch at my desk with the door open if anyone needs me. How stupid of her to even suggest that I am not human and do not have a right to eat lunch like her.

Sometimes I do close down to go to a meeting or an emergency on the other side of the building and then they act like I am lollygagging around.

We deserve a 30 minute duty free lunch just like everyone else and I take mine everyday without quilt! I lock my door and I exercise to blow off steam.The teachers get a 45 min conference period (off period) along with their lunch break. I sit in this office all day except for my 30 min lunch. SchoolNurseBSN, you need to take your lunch and don't think twice about it!
