what type of vision testing do you do on pre k, special ed, aside from the standard, snellen (box, horse, heart). I'm in middle school and I have to help out another nurse in town with pre k autistic program with screenings... any other vision screenings??

thanks

I have a prek-k school. We use Pediavision, but I occassionally have a kid whose pupils I cannot read. For those, I use the broken wheel test. - Broken Wheel Testâ„¢ They point to which car has the broken wheel while sitting like 10 feet from you, I think. I get down on the floor and sit with them to do it.

what if you don't have the whole fancy dancy machine

The broken wheel test is like flash card type things. You'd have to order them. I put a link up there.

I use an HTOV.

I start by having the kid match the letters on cards I show them to the letters on the sheet they are holding and give copious amounts of praise.

Then I light up the biggest letters on the machine and have them point on the sheet they are holding which one matches. Again, a sickening amount of praise.

Then I put glasses on them that block vision in one eye (Oh, my! Look how silly these are!! Now you can only see out of one eye!!!) and light up the appropriate size letters (I can't remember what size they are). The kid points on the paper which one is lit up while I point at the lit up letter.

If they cannot see it that well, they will usually guess. It has to be a fun game the entire time. And, honestly, with pre-K students with autism, many will still not understand. For those students, I am often writing "unable to condition" as their result and referring. I often try to call home for those kids instead of sending the referral letter. I will say "Hi Mrs. X. I wanted to let you know that we are doing vision screenings for Johnny's class and he wasn't able to do it. At this age, many of the students do not understand the test. If you have concerns about his vision, an eye doctor would be able to perform a more extensive exam"

No symbols charts are approved for vision screening in Texas schools. PK starts with the Snellen tumbling E with the alternative being the HOTV. Beyond that we he have something similar to what Kidz referred to; "alternative screening form" where you just observe and document if the kid can pick up a paper clip, tracks objects with their eyes, react to a voice behind them, etc.

I am a pre-school nurse, I use the McDowell screening kit. You pretty much stand 10 ft away and throw a red ball (different sizes are different values). If the student follows the ball with their eyes when you drop it, it means they can see at that acuity. Here is a link: http://www.wpspublish.com/store/p/2863/mcdowell-vision-screening-kit
