Hello everyone, I was wondering when you went for the School Nurse positon and you took the medication exam, what did the questions consist of? Were they mostly peds questions or maybe asthma meds and allergy meds questions? And what kind of med math was on the exam? Or were the questions totally random? Thanks in advance for your help :)

In my state there is no med exam.

I did not have a med exam either...sorry

Most meds given, at least at my school are asthma, diabetes, allergy and behavioral

No exam here either, although the nurses in our district conduct a med aide course for paraprofessionals, which includes a written exam and return demonstrations.

It covers the basics of the "rights" of medication administration, district policy and procedure, documentation, administration technique, common medications, safety, security, handling of controlled substances, communication with parents and staff, etc.

Thanks so much for the responses guys :) Hmm I'm wondering if they've implemented the med exams to weed out even more hopefuls? :rolleyes:

@ bsyrn: Thanks for the tips on the meds given at your school. I was thinking about focusing on those types of meds for the exam myself :)

@ Jolie: Hmm that seems to cover a broad spectrum of things to know... hopefully they won't ask those kinds of questions on my exam but I don't think they will seeing as it's a medication exam and all but thanks for the info :) I wonder though, the "common medications" you speak of, do you know what kinds of meds those happen to be?

The most common meds in my elementary and middle school were ADD/ADHD drugs, asthma inhalers, allergy meds including Epi-pens, and insulin.

There were a few students on behavioral medications, some who required digestive enzymes, some with common pain relievers, a couple with migraine or seizure drugs and an occasional short-term antibiotic.

The rare ones included an anti-arrhythmic drug and a central line heparin flush.

-missing information on the order

- calculations: right dose for the child's age and weight

- off label uses

- experimental drugs

- expired drugs

- how to dispose of medications

- what to do for field trips

- epi pen questions

- self carry

- ethical professional questions
