Interested in School Nursing

Hi everyone! I have been interested in school nursing for a while now. I have 4 years of experience in nursing (Antepartum, Postpartum, Nursery & Telemetry). I absolutely love children! And i think this would be a good fit for me because I want to work Monday - Friday now too. Any advice on how to make myself more marketable for this type of position?

Go talk to the school nurses in your distrtict where you live, or where your kids are enrolled if you have them (or a nearby district). Apply for a sub position.

In my state, school nurses in the public school system are paid according to the steps of the teachers' union.

It depends on where, I am on teachers step scale but that is not consistant with other area towns. (I am very blessd and make a great salary after 19 years).

Asking about salaray can be tricky, you may be able to go to your town website and get the information onthe contract

In many areas of the country school nurses earn considerably less than their counterparts in the hospital. But you have to consider that it's for 9 or 10 month's work. Some do per diem or camp nursing for the summer. Others consider it a fair trade for excellent hours. Good Luck!

Yes I figured the salary would be lower, I was just curious as to how low lol. But it makes sense, so I'll give it it try! I will continue doing my research as well. Thanks!

19 years of school nursing sounds great! As far as the contract, was your's renewed each year or did you have to apply?? I'm thinking of still doing some PRN work for extra money too.

The salary here in middle TN is ridiculously low. I get $11.22/hr and I'm an LPN with 23 years experience. Pay is hourly, so you don't get paid for vacations, holidays, or snow days. I get 25 hrs per week. I'm told the RN in charge over the entire district makes only $27k annually.

19 years of school nursing sounds great! As far as the contract, was your's renewed each year or did you have to apply?? I'm thinking of still doing some PRN work for extra money too.

I get a new contract every year.......thanks goodness!! No I do not have to reapply. It has been a wonderful situation for me. I came when my son was in 7th grade and was here all thru MS and HS and now he is 31! and I m still in high school......:)
