basically, if it's a simple bump, i do a neuro check, check for lumps/bumps and bleeding, and give them ice. i always call home - even if i have to leave a message. i monitor the student for 15 min or so, then send the back to class w/note to the teacher describing s/sx serious head injury, and call me if necessary. as to serious head bump/lumps etc. i also do neuro checks and ice, andt i always call home and speak to a live person. we had a kid here yesterday with a lump the size of an egg over his eyebrow. it hurt me to look at him...i called mom and she came right away to take him home. i tell them the s/sx serious head injury and to let md know right away if they occur. then i fill out an accident report and document everything, i had a kid last week who really whacked the back of his head - mom came to pick him up and bring him to the dr. he was complaining of dizziness and sleepiness. fortunately, he checked out fine.

hope this helps!

We give a call to the family and send a Head Bump letter with any head bump that occurs, even if they seem pretty minor. They will stay in the office for 20 min. and get an ice pack.

There have been a couple occassions where it did not seem they were hardly hurt and they ended up having a minor concussion, so I was glad that it was just routine. I do not have nurses in each of the schools and just Health para's, so they do not do the neuro checks.

I always call home, even if it seems like a simple bump.

It's funny that I saw this post today. Had a student collide with a metal pole during recess today. Told the teacher but did not come to the office, as he was instructed. Another teacher saw him and thought he was acting a bit strange and sent him in to see me. When the student got to me he was A/o x3, had not had decrease in LOC and wasn't complaining of H/A but his left pupil was almost pinpoint, while the right was a normal size. Called Mom right away and they picked him up to take him for medical attention. Still waiting to hear what the doc said. Of course, all was documented and an accident report was completed
