Specializes in ICU, Hospice, Nursing Education.

Hello!! I have been staying home with my kiddos for the past 5 years working PRN (nights and weekends) so that I could be here with them. I have been doing hospice for a while now and love it. Boy what a difference school nursing will be! I am so excited and the though that my girls will be going to school with me is a definite added benefit. Oh well, just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I look forward to getting to know you guys!!

I'm in a similar situation. Going to be at the same school district as my kids, coming directly from an ICU setting.

Hoping we both love it!

Something to consider... I joined NASN, along with my state chapter, & it has been extremely helpful & informative.

Welcome!! You are going to love it. But it is not the piece of cake everyone thinks!!! Stay in touch!!!

Welcome!! You are going to love it. But it is not the piece of cake everyone thinks!!!

I second that. My background is NICU and PICU. Most days I'm not too awfully busy at school. Much of my day is pretty routine handing out ice packs, bandaids, and tooth fairy necklaces. Except for my little diabetic whose blood sugars can go from 450 to 38 in a matter of hours. Or the kid with head injury who's vomiting blood. Or the one who ate a hot dog at lunch and had an anaphylactic reaction. I think one of the most challenging parts of being a school nurse is that I have to know every kid in school who has any chronic illness. I have had kids with transplants, autism, spina bifida, mitochondrial disorder, seizures, diabetes, sickle cell, pregnancy, STDs, schizophrenia, asthma, and profound mental retardation. Keeping up with them keeps me on my toes. Your acute care background will help you know how to quickly recognize an emergency and make you assertive when dealing with the many "bosses" that a school nurse has. Welcome and enjoy the ride!

:grpwlcm:You will learn a lot here. I know I do. Also, since school nursing cam be a bit isolated, you make "friends" here that are not from an education background. We bring something unique to the education setting. Enjoy your new job!
