Do I qualify for Refresher Course?

Nurses Retired

Published

I still don't hold an RN license, and reviewing right now for this NCLEX.

I graduated 2005, took the test 2007 and failed, then will be trying again this year.

so it's almost 4 years that I am not updated, physically on the nursing skills.

I tried applying in Hospitals for a Nurse Technician.I was questioned with this long

gap of not having an experience.Since I cannot work in nursing without any license,

I am thinking to update myself, with this refresher course ,do I qualify on this?Or this is

only for those already with a license and just inactive. That woman I talked to, was not

resourceful enough to give me some ideas.Looks like she was not interested on me having

no experience yet.

I would appreciate any inputs from readers here. Thanks to all.

Hello!

From what I have read about this refresher course, it applies to those who already have a license, in other words, they've been inactive for 2 or more years.

I don't have a license yet,I am also out of nursing for long time, so what I am thinking now is to concentrate on taking the test, then, once I can pass, I'll attend the refresher course, to be marketable.

Hope this idea will give you some picture of where you're going to start planning on what to do with your long absence in a nursing field.

Good luck to you.

Nursing refresher courses are designed for licensed (or previously licensed) RNs and LPNs wishing to return to clinincal practice. It is a pre-requisite that one hold or previously have held a nursing license. During the clinical portion of the course, the participant must obtain a temporary practice permit in the state where clinicals are held. The participant practices as an RN or LPN durng clinicals, not a student. This is what sets refresher courses apart from basic nursing education.

Your question about preparing for NCLEX long after graduation seems to be a common one here. I made this suggestion to another poster, and don't know if it's a possibility, but it might be worth a try.

What about contacting a nurse refresher program and explaining your situation. Ask if it would be possible to do only the theory portion of the course (since a license or temporary permit is not required for theory.) Perhaps that, combined with self-study or an NCLEX prep course would enable you to pass NCLEX.

Once you pass NCLEX, then you would have the license necessary to complete the refresher.

i am in a nurse refresher/remedial course and there are several rn/lpn's that either have not passed or have not taken nclex(in fact for one woman over 20 years grad and never sat for nclex),that are taking the class now. i don't know where you live but if i can give you further info let me know

To loretapp:

I just read this post and I was needing information about the same type of situation. I live in MO. Is there any information you could offer. I have been to RN school, graduated, sat for boards more than once and still not successful. Been out of school for 9 years. Any help would be great!
