Graduate in one state and move to another!!

Hello!

So I am graduating with my ADN the 18th of December and my husband took a job out of state.We are moving from Idaho to Washington after Christmas! I would love to hear any tips on how to take the NCLEX in a different state than where you graduated and how the process went. I am very nervous with moving and to make it more intense I am getting my license in a whole new state!! Any tips are much appreciated!!

You will need to apply to the BON of the state you are moving to. You can take the NCLEX anywhere, but your license would be in the state you applied for licensure in. You will need to look up the website for the Washington BON and find out what you need to send to them.

You just apply to the other state, and you will need to let your school know that you want them to send your school info to the other state BON. Nursing programs automatically send the necessary documentation on graduating students to their own BON every year. They can send your info to the other state, but they will need to know that's what you want them to do.

I did exactly this way when I graduated in 2004. Finished school in New York, moved the day after graduation and took my NCLEX in Florida. Just as the above posters stated, find out what you need from the BON in the state you are pursuing licensure in. It was really not a problem. Best of luck!

You can physically take NCLEX wherever you please for licensure in any state. You simply apply to the BoN of the state you wish to be licensed in. When you receive your authorization to test, you can schedule your exam anywhere. It doesn't have to be in the state you went to school in or the state you are applying for licensure in. You can receive a nursing degree in Idaho and test in Oregon for licensure in Washington.

The NCLEX content will not vary by state. Like others had stated, the BON in which you apply, varies. Apply for the Temporary Practice Permit when you do apply for your license.

It is possible... but do not get frustrated if you do not get an interview/job right away. You will be limited, the state you are moving to will have no idea about your school of nursing, or types of nurses that graduate from your SON. Focus on your resume.. have someone review it. Do mock interviews with your husbands help, know what to say.

Apply for RN Intern/New grad programs as apposed to RN positions. Be flexible. You may not get to work at the ideal hospital of your choosing right away. Apply at many hospitals in the area, do your research about the place you will be interviewing at. (They will ask why here?)

I did this as well, my program was in Washington and I moved to Oregon right out of school (where I applied for my license). Just a tip: get on the Washington BON site and print off your application for licensure before you leave, as you will most likely need your current nursing department heads signature in a couple of places. Much easier to get in person than through the mail, etc. Good luck to you! Enjoy Washington.
