Hi i am a nursing student. I am required to do a case study on a pt. I need journal articles on substance abuse mood disorder with depressive features. This pt is an alcoholic, doesn't abuse any other drugs. If anyone knows of any journals I would be forever grateful. I have been all over the net and haven't really find anything. thank you Janice

You might try doing a search under Dual Diagnosis. This term denotes patients who are diagnosed with alcoholism/drug addiction and another diagnosis such as depression, schizophrenia etc. This should open some information up to you, but then you will need to weed through the data to find out which articles really apply.

I don't work in treatment, so I am not a good resource but the key points that I hear on Dual DX patients are that you treat whatever is most acute BUT you must have an awareness of what treatments you might engage in that would worsen the other diagnosis. For example, avoid treating your anxious Dual DX pt with potentially addicting substances such as Valium. In treating the average addiction client, avoiding enabling is huge but you might need to engage in more supportive care with the schizophrenic DD patient because they will need closer one on one care to keep them on their antipsychotics.

Good luck.
