Are there any psych LPN's?

I've always been interested in psychology so I'm considering going into nursing to become a psych nurse. I have the opportunity to do a free LPN program. However, can you work in psych as an LPN? How hard would it be to find a job in psych as an LPN? Or should I just skip over the free LPN program and pay to go into an RN program?

Or you could also not have taken everything literally. LPN's ARE care providers where I work and management will TELL you that. It doesn't mean they don't have their license or have somehow lost their skills but they are not allowed to practice their skills in the psych hospitals here. I didn't say that anywhere in legislature or the health code that they were restriccted from practicing in psych here. The only psych units I know of are KPH and Holland has a psych unit in the hospital. Saint Mary's has a psych/med unit here in GR and they also do not hire LPN's. I can't say for sure if KPH or Holland employs LPN's or not, but in west michigan those are the only psych facilities I know of or that are ever talked about.

Borgess has a locked psych unit as well. But that's okay, I know Kalamazoo isn't important enough to even be a blip on the radar of the Great Grand Rapids.

brillo you are cracking me up. thanks for the smile

I can get snotty and "roll my eyes" too, but come on now is that really necessary? LOL at you, that is ridiculous. Borgess never heard of it, must be a small hospital in some country area. KPH is probably the only one that still hires LPN's, if they still do that is. Holland I'm pretty sure doesn't since they have Magnet status. So that is 1 hospital out of the only 5 I have ever heard of in this area for psych. Ever heard of people giving a general area of location because maybe they didn't want to get into the specifics of where they lived? Maybe next time when someone gives a general location such as West MI you won't be so ready to start an argument over it. I'd say what I said holds true...psych hospitals in this area don't hire LPN's, go to the state hospital which is the only one out of the 5 that does.

Excuse me I didn't know you were the Michigan Psych hospitals expert. "rolling your eyes" is it really necessary to engage say that LOL at you, that is ridiculous. Anyways haven't heard of Borgess, must be off in the country north of us. Is somebody a little bitter about Grand Rapids? Sure sounds like it, that's ok though it is a great area I understand. KPH is the only one that might still hire LPN's. So that would make 1 out of the 5 psych hospitals in this area that hires them. I think I'll still go with what I said earlier which is LPN's are not hired in psych here. I'll let you get back to "rolling your eyes" or maybe you need to "snap your fingers 3 times from left to right" maybe have your head bob like a bobble doll that sits on the dash while your at it.

Wow, looks like someone's a bit agitated.

And I'm sorry that you've never heard of Kalamazoo. We have a Division I university (Western Michigan University) plus a couple of private 4-year colleges, two Level 1 trauma centers (although the one at Borgess probably doesn't count, because you have never heard of it), and have even had a #1 song about us.

We were in the national news quite a bit just two years ago when President Obama delivered his first high school graduation speech at Kalamazoo Central High School's graduation. We were in the national news just a few years prior to that when it was announced that an anonymous donor would cover the cost of college for graduates from Kalamazoo Public Schools in a program known as The Kalamazoo Promise. We're known for being big on education here.

It says a lot about the quality of education in the mighty Grand Rapids that you think that Kalamazoo is "off in the country north of us". Kalamazoo County's population is roughly a quarter of a million people -- we're really not a small, rural area. And we're an hour directly south of you.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Can i get some haldol im nooowwwwwwww

Yep, that's the one! Hard to believe that someone an hour north of us hasn't heard of us, isn't it? ;)

I am currently a psychiatric LPN. I have worked both out patient and in patient. Not sure what area you are in, but here in Oklahoma, there are ample opportunities for LPNs that want to work in the psychiatric field and it pays good since not every one likes psych, it makes us psych nurses a rarity and valuable:)

American association of psychiatric technicians has a link on their page for psych nursing positions

SNF and Home Health does hire lpns. Some outpatient clincs do also.
