Pdn lvn to rn job situation

Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some advice here. It might be lengthy but I greatly appreciate any input. I have been a pdn lvn with my company for 1.5 years (first job) I absolutely love it but my dilemma is school and my schedule. I work full time weekends graveyard shift and go to school during the week full time mornings. I manage my time well. I'm a youngling 23 yo. And honestly I wish I had more time to" hang out" on weekends. For my next semester I plan to take most of my harder sciences to finally be done with my lvn to rn pre reqs. I'm not sure if I will be willing to do this schedule any longer once I start another semester. Would it be unprofessional to ask my company to put me on a prn schedule or a 1- 2 day shifts a week? I have been with the same pt since August 2013 and not constantly changing pts. I work for an agency btw. And money is not an issue.

It absolutely would not be unprofessional to ask your agency for different hours! In fact, it's my experience that we give up certain perks such as guaranteed break and meal times and fewer benefits because the flexible hours are seen as offsetting that.

The only thing that would be a concern is whether or not you will get the hours and the cases you prefer. Most agency staff are really only concerned with filling the blank spots which could mean a case with less than desirable hours or perhaps a distance away from your home.

Other than that, talk to your supervisor or director of your agency. All the best to you as you pursue your RN!

I agree with that 100%. I'd like to add that you could also consider floating so you can use other skills and/or find a case/shift that allows you to study at work during downtime. Studying at work would give you more free time outside of work to have a life.

Most of the hh agencies pride themselves on using the word "flexibility" in their recruiting efforts, so, of course, there is no problem in asking to change your hours to fit your schedule. Don't give it a second thought.
