Specialties Private Duty

Why do these private duty home care companies lie so much? Before I filled out all of the required and extensive paperwork, I specifically asked ahead of time if they had the days and shifts that I was seeking. Oh yes. They both assured me that there was plenty of work available in my area. Now the reality is that No, they don't have anything they promised. Lies, lies, and more lies!!!!!

i can understand your frustrations, however what do you do when you discover that one of the private duty nurses you work with lies about everything? there is no supervisor to talk to. this rn tells little white lies and huge lies that affect our patient's life. when family was told about these issues, they didn't care, told us nurses to stop gossiping about one another and quit the drama. but there is a real serious issue at hand! help!!!

i take it you are independent and not through an agency since you say there is no supervisor. yes, this is tough - even if you have a supervisor. i once resigned a case (through an agency) because of a nurse that was not only telling lies but being grossly incompetent with pt care. the family, initially at least, only saw this as "nurse drama". when it all began, i initially had the backing of the supervisor at the agency. but then, wouldn't ya know, the agency was sold to a new company and most of the management left! i was left with no one who knew me (that i was the competent nurse on the case) and the details of the situation. the new supervisor was no help at all and seemed to perceive me as the problem! i quit because i feared getting fired. i felt so torn up - leaving the pt with this incompetent nurse and a clueless new supervisor!! but sometimes you have to do what is best for you. this other nurse really scared me...i feared getting falsely accused or my license being put in jeopardy. the story is a long one...i eventually ended up back on this case through another agency...because the family eventually realized how incompetent this other nurse was.

so i don't really have any advice, only my story. private duty has unique problems, and each situation a bit different. maybe start a new thread, as some might not see this at the bottom of this thread.

It is sad when a person has to quit a case and an agency over the unprofessional behavior of another nurse. There are only so many cases and so many agencies to go around and it is a shame when the family does not realize there is a problem until it blows up in the patient's face.

Yeah, it's funny, I hear from long-timers...it's a tradition, we don't know why.

My last agency was not always forthright either. Kyasi, I too wondered at first why they would waste the company's time and money in the hiring process if they did not have the hours/locations/case types the nurse was interested in or available for! But after seeing the situation more at Maxim at least....Maxim was very sales oriented, and I think they just wanted as many nurses "on the role" to call as possible to fill cases. Any warm body would do. They saw nurses as chattel to make the company money. Also...They would literally HOUND me to work (calling me multiple times about the same shift at times!) - but if I was not available, I was not available. I came to the conclusion that too many of the nurses must have been VERY lacking in assertiveness and easy to manipulate....and would end up saying yes after being called for the 3rd time, even though the shift hours or location or type of pt was NOT really good for them.

I didn't think of it this way but I can see the truth in this. I didn't have any backbone when I began in home care and often took shifts I didn't want to because I had a hard time saying no. And if I did say no, I had to justify why. I finally learned to just say no. PERIOD. No reason, no explanation. I got tired of putting work ahead of my own families needs and my sanity!

I'm glad I found this post because I thought it was only me getting the run-around. I've had two home health companies promise me full-time for private duty. They've even given me general start dates. Basically, the agency told me that they "have to fully staff a new case even before that client has decided to go with that agency". If they go with a different one, all the new hires for that case basically get the shaft. This is kinda putting the cart before the horse, but I guess they all do it. So the agency keeps telling me "mom" is dragging her feet. Whatever!!

What about the lies about "competive wages"

OMG!!!! How could I forget to mention the biggest lie of them all- "competitive wages."

I just now received my paycheck in the mail for my 2 hour nursing hospice orientation from one of these agencies.

The check is for $9.23!!!!!!!! They told me that they pay $17 an hour!!!! This check is for only one hour not two hours and its says my rate of pay is $10 an hour!!!!!!! Unbelievable. Thank God I only wasted 2 hours with this nursing agency!!!!!!:mad::mad: Unbelievable!!!!!

They said I was lucky that I didn't have to pay for my own hospice orientation!!!!!. They said they only pay gas money for all orientations with this agency!!!!!!!!! When they hired me, they said they had plenty of home hospice patients in my area. I talked to them today and now they say all they have is private pediatric home care patients in my area. So maybe I will now get some shifts in pediatric home care?:uhoh3::uhoh3::uhoh3:

Not necessarily.

You sure are right about that. When I got home I got a message saying to call them because they have something available for me this weekend. When I called them back, someone else answered the phone and said "No, we don't have anything available for you but we will call you this weekend if something comes up.

Then what was the point of the hospice orientation?.. what are they going to do now, make you take pediprep classes and waste more of your time.. and then tell you they have a 65yr old patient with a trach/vent or something. wow im sorry they have been so bad, but what can ya do? that must be super frustrating.
