Working and going to nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm planning on applying to nursing schools in the fall. Once I get accepted (hopefully), I have to get a job, wherever I choose to go to school. How many of you work and go to school? I work right now and I'm at a CC. I know it's gonna be harder at a 4 yr, but is it impossible? I kinna don't have a choice in this... I do have my family helping me out financially, but I feel bad and would rather work than get everything handed to me?

I feel your pain. I got accepted into an ADN program in Illinois and have no choice but to work. I am the head of household and the bills sadly do not go away while I'm school. I am going to cut down my hours to probably 30 and have already warned my friends that they won't see me until Christmas break and even then not long because I'll want to sleep! I'm not sure how 2nd year will work out because we'll have even more hours -especially clinicals. The situation will have changed a bit at home and I may look into home health that will maybe have more flexible hours and have the added benefit of giving me experience.

Good Luck!

man well this is depressing!!!

What the heck is all this talk of "nursing shortage" then???? If there's such a shortage why can't people get jobs?

This field is supposed to be the best field to get into for job security and "number of openings" in the future. It's in every single article and every website you go to concerning careers in the future. Nursing is number 1, top of the list for everything!! How could it be so difficult to get a job!??

Thanks for the info MN-Nurse!!! =) its always good to get some good, real advice

Ha ha NM-Nurse! Your answers are definitely correct.

Except the my top choice school used to have a stipend at the main hospital where the clincials are but I think that its over and you couldn't even get hours anyway :(

I dunno about that "#1 on top of every list" thing....

The top jobs I keep seeing for 2011 are:

Software Engineer / System Analyst

Actuary

Dental Hygienist

Audiologist

In healthcare, they have stopped listing RNs and started listing Massage Therapists and Athletic Trainers.

CareerCast's recent ratings don't even have RNs in the top 10 - it comes in at #93. Right ahead of Sewage Plant Operator and two spots behind Teacher's Aide!

Some outfit called Careerbliss has RNs at #10. Oh well, I don't want to be any of the ones listed 1-9!

By the way, these "Best jobs" articles and websites SUCK. Difficult to navigate and slow to load. Code Monkey may be a top job but they sure do stink at it.

Well I'm looking for the future, the next 5 years or so since I'm just now starting back in school. I obviously want to choose a career path that will be in demand in the next few years once I graduate. I've read so much, but now hearing differently so I'm starting to become torn on which path to take. I was leaning more towards Respiratory Therapist but then decided RN would be better due to a higher demand for that position and better opportunities for growth in the field....

Although I can always become an RT and then move on to RN if I'm not satisfied correct??

"Registered nurses (RN) are on the list for top growth in medical careers, with a projected increase of 22.2 percent. Over a half million more RN jobs are expected to be added in the ten year period ending in 2018."

i would work! right now im taking my last prereqs for nursing and Ive been working as cna So with the job i have im actually working side by side with nurse, which gives me a great opportunity to learn more about my career. When I get accepted into nursing school i prob. wont work as much
