What tape recorder do you prefer?

I tried to find a recent thread about tape recorders, but the most recent thread I found was 2008. So, I thought I would create another one. I'm in the process of trying to find one for my A&P class, do you have any suggestions? I have no clue what i'm looking for when I am shopping for them :-). If you could help, that would be great! Thanks!

I'm try to find an app for my iPad. Seen and heard lots of people using Ipad now for recordings, but for some reason I still want a small separate recorder.

I've seen people using their iPhones or various tablets. Since I had neither, I picked up a dedicated unit that hooks up to my computer via USB. Mine is the Olympus VN-81000PC. There's apparently a newer model out now. I love my little digital recorder.

I have been looking at Olympus recordings for a month now. May have to go ahead and buy one.

I use my iPad and the Notability app. It saves my recordings with my powerpoints, and I can press on any notes I've typed and automatically play the part of the lecture at that point. I can also email them to people and save them to Dropbox.

However I don't really ever do the type-syncing. I don't like using a keyboard while recording because the click-clacking is LOUD!

I have a Digital recorder. Olympus WS-803 Digital Voice Recorder. It is AWESOME!!! When shopping for one there are a few features that can make their use much easier. I look for a built in rechargeable battery, you do not want to have batteries run out. Next, storage capacity, my Olympus has 8G of memory and you can add a micro SD card if needed. I can store a whole semester of lectures on it, if needed. Some recorders do not have enough storage and with nursing school being so hectic, I don't always have time to download them onto the computer before the next class. Another feature that is great is a built in USB. This enables you to not worry about having the cord available. The USB slides out of the bottom like a thumb drive and it just plugs into the computer.

These features do come at a price. My recorder cost about $120 but is worth every penny. The last Olympus recorder I had lasted 2 1/2 years until I crushed it on accident. There are cheaper recorders but ease of use, being convenient and battery life can make all the difference.

I have a small olympus vn5200 digital recorder. It's about 3 inches long, an inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. Mine holds about 50 hours of lecture, runs on two - triple AAA batteries. It comes with a cable to transfer the lectures to my laptop or Ipad. I've used it now for 4 years and it has great sound quality and storage capacity. I picked it up at Radio Shack for about $50.00. I store it in an old eyeglass case to keep it safe in my book bag, and stash a couple of extra batteries in the case with it. I like it because I can plug in my headphones, and put it in my pocket while I'm out for a walk or run. I've sat mainly in the front or mid section of the classroom and my sound quality is perfect and it's easy to use.

I graduated last year, but I had a LiveScribe pen. It records the lecture while you take notes, draw pictures, whatever. It uses a special paper pad. I used different books for different classes, When you touch the pen to your notes it plays that part of the lecture you can fast forward, rewind, or even slow it down. The pen is also able to download to your computer and store all your notes with lecture and allows to search by key words. It was really nice when I had an instructor who would allow recordings, they didn't know it was a recorder. You can get the pen at Target or online. Good luck

I used to use a $100 olympus audio recorder, but found I actually get better results with the Hi-Q MP3 recorder android app on my Nexus S phone. I have much more control for adjusting gain levels so that the instructor is loud enough but not too loud. A meter shows me the volume levels being recorded in real time so I can adjust accordingly.

There's a free version but I went ahead and splurged for the $4 version ;-) I can easily plug my phone into my computer, download the recordings which have the time and date tagged to them, change the name to whatever I want, and email it to friends on the rare occasions they miss a class. Since the screen can be off during recording, I can record for 5 hours of class and still have plenty of battery life on my phone.

My study partner uses one of those and she LOVES it. It's pretty convenient, and she's able to go directly to certain parts of the lecture with relative ease.

I should have added in my earlier post that with my little Olympus digital recorder, I have been able to keep an entire semester of lectures and reviews on the recorder's drive with plenty of room to spare. I can't go directly to parts of the lectures with a quick touch of a button, but I do jot down times periodically during the lecture so I can just fast forward to portions when I need to.

I have always plugged ear buds into my recorder and listened to lectures while on the exercise bike at the gym.
