What tape recorder do you prefer?
I have a small olympus vn5200 digital recorder. It's about 3 inches long, an inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. Mine holds about 50 hours of lecture, runs on two - triple AAA batteries. It comes with a cable to transfer the lectures to my laptop or Ipad. I've used it now for 4 years and it has great sound quality and storage capacity. I picked it up at Radio Shack for about $50.00. I store it in an old eyeglass case to keep it safe in my book bag, and stash a couple of extra batteries in the case with it. I like it because I can plug in my headphones, and put it in my pocket while I'm out for a walk or run. I've sat mainly in the front or mid section of the classroom and my sound quality is perfect and it's easy to use. Good luck with your classes Mtnsandsky

Thank you Lord that I failed my first nclex
thank you for your inspiration! Just passed my psychiatric nursing class today, onto medical surgical II beginning tomorrow along with pharmacology II. I'm not sure how to message you, but would love to know the names of the books and reviews you used.

Why was it hard for you?
I'm beginning my second year of school this fall. School was hard for me because it had been 35 years since I graduated from high school! Math was particularly hard for me as it was back in my younger days. I found it difficult to do group projects when there was always someone in the group who didn't pull their weight. I feel like I have to spend more time studying than most, which is okay, but I also work 20 hours a week as a cna and I volunteer in a hospice center 3 hours a week. I love school and all the incredible things I'm learning. Who says and Old Dog can't learn new tricks, ha. I hope you will put your fears aside and enjoy your fellow nursing students. We have all had to adjust to school, each of us with a different set of fears but we all support each other. Good Luck to you!

Waitlist length & what to do while waiting
Uhmanda, When I got on the Front Range Community College waitlist I had to have my Biology, Anatomy and Physiology I, and II done, as well as my Microbiology. These were requirements prior to getting put on the waitlist. Just so you know, after May 31st this year, they will not accept any more waitlist. They are going to competitive entry. They will get everyone on the waitlist into school over the next 3 years and then the competitive entry will begin. It is a good program, and the instructors really seem to care about us. Next week is our final and I'll have one year of nursing school done! Good luck, mtnsandsky

Any tips for Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology was a great class. It ties everything from A and P I and II together. Just do the required reading, attend each class, take notes and study. Because it was engaging, I thought it was easier than Microbio. Enjoy the class, you'll do great.

Waitlist length & what to do while waiting
Hello, Congratulations on making the jump to nursing school. Forty years old is young! I just began at FRCC August of 2011 and I'm 55 years old. I believe the current waitlist is a bit longer than it was when I put my name on it. I was told by an instructor that they are up to 400 on the current list. They brought in 42 students for my class. Make sure you take your pathophysiology class while you're waiting to get in, and be sure to brush up on your math skills. Might be a good idea to purchase a nursing math book and practice your dimensional analysis. There's a lot to do when school starts, but as long as you keep up with everything you'll do just fine. I did find out it's important to actually remember the things you learn in your science classes, not just get them out of the way. FRCC instructors have been great. They care about their students and we were told that they have a 98% NCLEX pass rate.

Can a new graduate be a hospice RN?
I'll be starting nursing school in the fall of 2011. I would love to eventually be a hospice nurse and wondered if volunteering for a hospice facility during my schooling would give me some of the practical experience I would need. When I graduate, should I try and find work in any particular field of nursing to prepare me for hospice? I'll graduate at the ripe old age of 56, but have dreamed of going to school for 35 years. I'd apprecialte any suggestions anyone can send my way. Thanks, mtsandsky:redbeathe

I'm just starting out on the journey to become an RN
Congratulations! You can do it!! I've wanted to be in the medical field since I was in high School, 36 years ago. I began my pre requisites two years ago and will begin the nursing program for an ADN this fall. I found a wonderful math tutor (worth the money) and she wouldn't let me fail. Now if I can just get over the fear of needles, ha. mtnsandsky

Does Having CNA Exp Help so Much in Nursing School?
I begin the ADN program in fall of 2011. I think I'll take the CNA course over the summer and try to work as a CNA on the weekends. I agree, that it has to help me feel more comfortable with patients. Just having one less thing to learn the first few months of school will helpful. mtnsandsky
