What classes are good to take with others?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Since I'm a fairly new student, I was wondering if anyone knew what prerequisite courses are good to take with others. Certain people tell me not to take anything with microbiology, and others tell me I'm crazy for taking math, english, and human anatomy at the same time. I work part-time as a cashier so I can only take 3 classes per semester. Anyone that has taken their prerequisites for the RN program can you please give me some advice?

okay i'm gonna have to double up on something hard just to fit it in two years. So should i take chemistry and microbiology on one semester or one of them with with my ap classes.

I totally wouldn't take micro AND chem together. What other classes do you have to take yet?

Last semester I took chem, bio (pre, pre-req), eng, and a history class together and got A's in all of them. I asked my bio professor what science classes to take together and he recommended taking them seperatly, but if you must, take micro with anatomy or physiology with anatomy...not micro with phys. (this was at City College in San Diego).

So, I am taking Anatomy and Physiology this fall in addition to a stats class online and American Sign Language. I dont work, so all my time is available for school.

Good luck and I hope this gave you some insight.

I would not take Drug Dosages and Chemistry together. to me they seem to run together and I get the two confused but that's just me.

Hey everyone,

I am going to get started with pre-reqs in Jan 07. I just need to satisfy the sciences, I need 1 year of chem or bio, 1 year of A&P and 1 term of Micro Bio. I am planning on taking Chem and A&P together for the year and then Micro by itself. Does anyone have suggestions regarding Chem vs. Bio? As I understand it I only need a year of one or the other; but I want to take the one that will benefit me the most.

Hello to all,

I have kind of a wack-o situation....I graduated in 04' from Georgia Southern University wth a BS in Interior Design! I actually was a Nursing major first, then changed to design because everyone around me convinced me since I have a creative/artsy background. Now, I have been working in the design field for 2 years, but have kept Nursing on my mind constantly! I have decided, after some long, hard-core thinking, that I want to pursue my Nursing degree because I feel that it is what I was supposed to do all along!

I am planning to apply to Kennesaw State's Nursing program, which I have heard from one of the program's advisors, that it is EXTREMELY competitive to get in. The advisor told me that last year they had between 800-1,000 applicants to fill 56 spots!! I was thinking, '...you have got to be kidding me!!...' That alone makes me super nervous, but at the same time excited to get in there and make the grades I need to get in and prove to myself that I can do this.

Their program requires 12 prereq's before you can begin, but only 7 of those 12 have to be complete to apply (5 have to be math and/or science). So, I only have 3 of those 12 complete that will transfer from GSU: ENGL 1101, 1102 & College Algebra, all of which I made a 'B' in. The advisor told me that last year it took the applicants having 8, 9 and 10 A's out of the 12 to get in, so I will have to basically make all A's in the 9 I have left...... Whhhew!....

You still with me?!?.....

So, if I apply by Sept. 07 to the program, I wouldn't even begin until June 08' if I get in. I have Spring 07, Summer 07, Fall 07 and Spring 07 to take the following classes:

- Statistics

- A&P I

- A&P II

- Chem I

- Chem II

- Psyc I

- Psyc II

- Sociology

- Microbiology

Sheesh!! How will I do this?! Am I just insane to try and take on A&P, Chem I and Statistics in the Spring? In order to even be considered for June 08' admission, I have to have 4 more maths and/or sciences complete by Sept 07, so I kind of HAVE to take 3 classes in the Spring and 1 in Summer. I keep reading on here that you shouldn't take 2 sciences together that have labs, but I am kind of stuck here....is it possible to manage?....

Can I do it? Anyone?......:uhoh21:

stobbe,

It is very possible to take 2 science classes and still get A's. It is just a lot of hard work and studying (and not missing classes). Last semester, I took Chem and Bio together with an Eng and Hist class and got all A's. This semester I am taking Anatomy, Physiology (they seperate the two here into one semester classes each, like taking A&P1 and 2 together), a behavioral science stats class, and American Sign Lang (which is not an easy A as some believe). So far, with keeping up with my studies, I have an A in all of these and it does seem possible to keep this A throughout the rest of the semester. Hopefully, this gives you some encouragement.

Good luck

I am new to this as well. This semester I am taking Medical Terminology and Nutrition. Next semester I'm going to take math and human development both online courses. I am horrible in math but i need to start working on it since I need 2 math classes before I can take chem. I would like to be taking 3 classes but I can't think of anything light to take with those 2 classes. I am super afraid of math but people keep telling me it was only scary when i was a kid and now that i am an adult it shouldn't or may not even be as hard as i think it will be. My strong point is english but i know that involves a lot of reading and writing and i don't know if i want to dump that on top of math. I know I also don't want to take english and psych together because I may be up to my neck in papers and reading. So I have no idea.

I would go talk to a counselor and find out what you classes you will need to take. After that with the list of classes he/she gives you try to pick between 2 - 4 classes. I would suggest not mixing science courses, unless you can really handle it. If you budget your time you should have no problem taking both English Comp. or Psychology during the same semester.

I've talked to a counselor already and I have the list of what I need. He thinks I should have no problem taking math, human development, and english at the same time. He keeps reassuring me the math might not be as bad as I think.

definitely try to balance out your lab components. this semester for me is pretty easy but next semester is going to be tough with microbiology (+ lab), general/organic/biochemistry II (+ lab), intro to ethics + whatever classes i decide to take.

there are also a variety of electives that would be really beneficial for a nursing major. right now, i'm taking medical terminology as an elective and i highly recommend taking it (if your school offers it which i'm sure they do). some other good electives that my institution offers are basic pharmacology (even though i'm taking an actual nursing pharmacology course in about 2 years), study of infectious disease, and death & dying. although they may be electives, they can be very beneficial. talk to your academic advisor about it. =)

My plan is take a science + lab one day (M W F) another science + lab (T TH) with any luck that should break things up enough so that they don't become jumbled.

If that’s not enough to drive someone to drink, I’ll be taking these additional courses:

Concepts of Professional Nursing, Dev. Psychology, and finally Nutrition.

With any luck by the end of the semester I won't be bald nor sleep deprived.

I am taking chem 102, A&P 102, and micro this semester. I am doing well. Have all A's so far. I took A&P 101 and chem 101 in the summer. Did well there also. It is totally doable. I have 3 kids and work 30+ hours per week. Oh. and school is over an hour away. You can do it. AND you can get A's.
