West Central Technical College

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Specializes in PICU; NICU.

Hello all! This is my first post, and I just had a question. I'm applying to the ADN program at West Central Tech on April 1. I was just curious if anyone knows the average gpa of those that get accepted into the program? Also, I know the average NLN percentiles are in between 80-99, I was wondering if a 96 percentile would be enough to compensate for a less than perfect gpa? The more I think about it, the more nervous I become!:uhoh21: Any help would be appreciated!

Anyway taking classes at West Central Technical College - chemistry, algebra or any pre-req. for BSN program?

HopefulRN2010,

I noticed from the threads that you had been accepted into a nursing program. Was it West Central Tech? How is their program? Is it easy to work while in the program? If I have a 3.2 GPA in prequisites, do I have a chance? I am taking the NLN exam tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

I am currently a prenursing student at WCTC. I have all A's thus far, and won't apply in April 2010 without them. I'm taking my final Math and BIO 2113 next 1/4. Has anyone taken the NLN yet, and what are your suggestions for study? I have purchased flashcards and the NCLEX pre-nursing exam book. They are very different. Which one do you think helps more?

I took the NLN back in October 2008 (at West Central) and used the NLN study guide only. I made a 99. I went through each section, copied the practice tests, took them, then made new copies and continued to take each test until I could make 100. I know that my already knowing the problems influenced my higher grades-but the repetition also imprinted the different formulas, rules, etc. in my head really well. As I studied the vocabulary, I looked up any words in the answer choices that I did not know the meaning of (not just the correct answers). I rewrote a lot fo the mathematical rules in the study sections before the practice test in the guide. I studied all of the book-not just the practice tests. I spent about 30 min-an hour daily on the guide for about 2 weeks before the test.

I don't know anything about the flashcards, but the study guide sure did work for me!

that's awesome!!! I have a friend who took it about 6 months ago, and to this day doesn't know how to read her score. She and I are studying now, and I've been doing what you said...30 mins+ every day. Are you in the program now? Or did you just apply?

Hello again!

I am not in the program yet-I have just recently applied. I am awaiting an interview. I know my score going in, but the interview is worth 25% of the total, so it could still "make me or break me". I did participate in the mock interview and I do recommend that you do that when the time comes-it was an eye-opener.

I am through with all my prerequisites-and just hoping to get the acceptance letter after the interview. Best of luck to you!:D

Fifth & Fabo,

I used the NLN study guide as well. The cd that they included was very helpful. Good luck.

b1017thompson,

How can I participate in the mock interviews? Are those offered at the school?

Hey Blessed2009,

The mock i/v's are offered at the school. You might email Lauren Willard at the school and ask who sets them up. I'm not going to take my mock for a few more quarters.

Something else...I have the NLN Pre-Nursing Entrance Exam book. Is that the same one you are speaking of? It has all sections broken down in the beginning, and then 3 practice tests at the end. It's really good, but mine didn't come with a CD. :sniff: I got mine at Barnes and Noble almost a year ago. Do you think they sell the CD individually?

And how did you do on your NLN?????

I'm sorry BLESSES-I did not mean to ignore your question! I did the mock interview a couple of weeks ago. We had to sign up ahead of time. You need to call the "one stop career center"(name?) at the Murphy campus to see when they'll offer them again. It was enlightening! A little scary, too, but I am sure that it was helpful.

Fifth&Fabo:

I did not have a CD with the NLN guide that I purchased off Amazon a few months ago. The more you have to work with, the better off you'll probably be!Try looking online for just the cd-you may have some luck! You might also post a "wanted" poster on a couple of bulletin boards around Murphy and get one used and "cheap" from another nursing student!

B1017Thompson,

Bless you!!! What was the i/v like? I've pulled loads of questions off line from other RN schools, and have answers ready....but don't know which one's they'll ask. And thanks for the "wanted" idea!!! And not to be nosy...but how'd you do on the NLN?

Hey again!

Bear with me-my internet keeps cutting out today.

The mock interview including the following questions:

why are you interested in nursing?

why would we want you in our program?(I gave some strengths there)

Tell me about a time in your life when you showed compassion.

How do you manage tasks?(write lists!)

How do you prioritize your lists?

What type of degree are you pursuing?

What agency accredits our RN program here at WCTC?

What test do you have to take upon completion of our program in order to become licensed as an RN?

What is the hardest part of returning to school later for you (I was 39 when I started on the 4 prerequs that I needed in order to apply for nursing school)

There were probably a few that I have forgotten. They also checked my appearance, grooming, dress, body language and posture, eye contact, behavior(alert, interested, confident?), how I fielded questions, was I clear, did I cite examples, etc. Two people did the interview, a male and a female (I do not know if I can tell names, so I won't)

They critiqued my interview and gave me suggestions afterward.

I made a "99" on the NLN. :wink2:
