Thinking about becoming an RN

I'm new to this forum. I'm thinking about becoming an RN.

I'm just curious. Are there any RNs out there, that can tell me what to expect. I'm very passionate about this.

Welcome to Allnurses.com! Although I am an RN, I cannot tell you what to expect because each person's experience is vastly different.

For instance, we know nothing about your educational background. The person who dropped out of high school in 9th grade and is barely reentering school after 20 years might think nursing school is the hardest thing he's ever done, whereas the individual who already has a MS degree in chemistry and has been working as an environmental chemist for the past 10 years might thing nursing school is a breeze.

I agree with TheCommuter. Also, the question is very broad. What makes you want to be a nurse? What kind of nursing interests you? How old are you? What is your background? Have you worked in healthcare at all? What do you imagine nursing being like?

Thank you. I'm worried about the NCLEX test. Was it hard for you? My mind is really set on this.

Perhaps you might be projecting too far in the future. 85 percent of all US-educated candidates pass NCLEX on the first attempt, so in other words, four out of five people who take NCLEX pass it the first time around. You only need to answer about 50 percent of the higher level questions correctly to fulfill the passing standard.

NCLEX is not all that difficult. The people who repeatedly fail it are in the very small minority, but they tend to make themselves very much known. Good luck to you!

One more question. I will probably start nursing school next spring. What are some subjects that will help me prepare? I want to get a good understanding before I start. That way, it will be less complicated. I know, it's not a breeze or a walk through the park, but I'm very determined.

I'll think of the next months before I start, as Pre-Nursing lol. I just want to prepare myself.

Have you already completed the typical prerequisite coursework such as anatomy & physiology, microbiology, medical terminology, human growth & development, etc.?

And BTW: I'm a 34 year old male in NY. I'm just wanting to find a career that I have a passion for. I have worked as a CNA in nursing homes, so at least I have that experience.

Well I'm not an RN, I am an LPN. But I am currently taking my last semester of pre reqs for a bridge program. You said you haven't completed any general classes first. I don't know of any schools that allow you to apply for a program without doing any pre requisite courses first. So expecting to start nursing school in spring of 2015 is very far fetched. Instead of worrying about the nclex, I think finding a school you want to attend and getting all the information you need about the program is more prudent. Schools usually have an advisor you can talk to. And then after getting all the necessary information, signing up for some of your pre requisite classes. That will be the beginning of your journey to becoming a nurse. I would suggest searching for some threads in AN for some helpful tips and info.

Yes. I have contacted several schools a few days ago, here in my part of NY. I'm waiting for them to get back with me. I'm just excited about starting. I don't care if it takes me a few years or even 5 or 6 years. I'm very determined to do this.

I wish I had did this right out of high school, but never too late to turn around. I'm just 34 years old lol. I still have time. The only thing that has stopped me all these years, is me!

You need to complete the prereqs before even applying to nursing school so look into the schools you like then do the prereqs
