Study advice for Chem 1

I'm taking Chemistry 1 this semester. The teacher is young and still learning how to teach..he's great but is kind of 'experimenting' on this class. We have our homework online (that takes FOREVER to complete) reading a book that goes with the homework and then lectures and lab in class. I crammed for the last test because we had so much reading and homework to do and then none of it was even on the test. It was everything he'd taught us in lecture. This isn't just me having this issue most of my other classmates are as well. Reading the book is just a distraction to 'try to get in time'. So..I'm thinking I don't need the book and if I don't understand something I'll look it on Khan academy. As I said he teaches everything in class that will be on our tests and homework and has very little to do with the book. Anyone with thoughts on this?

Lucky you your teacher actually "teaches" concepts. My teacher talks about his family and other sciences: physics, life science ect. He says it's not his job to teach us anything, his job is to evaluate our learning. Lol he actually told us he's the last person to go to for questions and when you do ask him a question he responds by asking you a question about your question.

This type of teacher doesn't work for most people but I love him because he's funny and I enjoy his random lectures. It works for me because I study three hours at home and learn easily from textbooks.

I would report this professor to the school. That's rediculous. No teacher should tell you not to ask them questions... He works not get a good evaluation from me - and often evals are used to determine tenure.

I'm glad you are able to learn from the book, but he should still do his job - you are paying to be taught after all!

He is a VERY well known teacher. A recommendation letter from him is gold. I doubt anyone could ever get him fired. He's just way too high up the ladder. He used to be dean of science, mathematics and engineering so I'm sure reporting him wouldn't do squat.

That's kinda how it is for my precal teacher. He teaches us what we need to know..but we students are constantly correcting him. Everyone tries to get him though because he's such a easy teacher. Like he gave me a grade I wasn't happy with Tuesday...today I went back in for class and my grade was much higher because his answer sheet was wrong and I was right...(as were many of the other students). SO I'm not really worried about his class cause he's really easy to work with even if it gets annoying all the stuff he gets wrong. It's just my Chem teacher... :/

I never really used my book in Chemistry unless it was to clarify something I didn't understand. Pretty much all my science classes use information from lectures/outlines/notes from the teacher, almost never textbooks. I supplement with the books.

This kills me. He's essentially abusing his position. I'm glad I'm not in his class, at 39, I've dealt with crap like that too many times - and couldn't put up with it.

Like I said it doesn't work for everybody. He's waaay more entertaining than my bio 5 teacher was and as a stay at home mom I need a good chuckle! Plus I learn better studying solo.

Wow really? The complete opposite from me thus far. The textbook has been my only source of info. The power points are always distracting to me.
