Shadowing program

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I am submitting an application for an RN shadowing program at my local hospital. I have to choose a first and second choice of department that I would like to shadow in. My problem is I have no idea what I want to do yet. My goal is to see "real life" what nursing is like to be sure this is right for me. Any suggestions on the best departments for this?

I would suggest Med/Surg, because that's where you're going to spend time in clinicals when you're in the nursing program. Does a specialty interest you? ER? NICU? Cardiology? Peds?

Think about what appeals to you most about nursing and then choose a specialty where you feel you'll be exposed to it the most.

I totally agree with Sopranokris!! I would say think back to the reason why you wanted to become a nurse. Did you have to take care of a loved one? What triggered your interest? Med Surg would be ideal because any and every emergency you would think of you would witness!! :yes: I think this opportunity itself is awesome! I wish my local hospital had this avenue for individuals to experience along their journey. I think the school Im hoping to get into had it but students wouldn't show up or were late. It always takes one bad apple to ruin it for everyone. Anywho, congrats to you in this journey and enjoy the ride.........

Like the above posters said, Med-Surg is an all around type of nursing. In Med-Surg you'll see a vast amount of different things, but you won't see labor patients, ICU/trauma patients, pediatric patients, or patients while in the ER. So really, you can see lots of different types of things at one spot (Med/Surg), or you can see a lot of a particular type of patient that may be more or less exciting than you were hoping to.

If you can pick two, and you get to go to both, I would definitely put one down as Med/Surg and one specialty that you think you'll like.

Med/Surg b/c it is will you will be spending the most time in clinicals usually. Such a broad amount of illnesses. If you need a second then choose a speciality that interests you like labor and delivery, peds, nicu, icu, ed.
