Rasmussen, Herzing, or Century?

U.S.A. Minnesota

I am a pre-nursing student and am about to apply for Nursing school in January at Century. However I don't think my TEAS test score of 65 will get me into the new MANE program for the Fall 2015 start. My GPA will be a 3.75 with a composite score of only 10.75. I can either wait 3 more weeks and retake it before the admissions deadline (Feb. 1st) and study for a better score or I can start right away at for the Professional Nursing (2 year RN) program by January 5th. I have heard mixed reviews from both friends who have attended Rasmussen and reading the review on here. I have been looking at other schools such as Herzing but have not been able to find ANY information on their Nursing program. So I am a little sketchy but am wondering if there are any other Nursing Colleges in the state of Minnesota that people recommend.

A little background info on me: I am 25 years old and attended the U of M Twin Cities for Fashion Design for 2 years. I did not graduate but pursued it independently for 2 more years after that. Soon I wasn't passionate anymore and worked plenty of dead end retail jobs in between. I noticed my strength wasn't in sales but I loved working with people. I decided to pursue Nursing since I loved helping others and there was a great job outlook for them in the future. I took baby steps and got my CNA a year ago and worked at the local hospital. I took pre-requisites at St. Cloud Technical for a year but eventually wanted to return back to the Twin Cities where I grew up. Which brings me to now, I am currently at Century and literally have no more pre-requisite classes to take next Spring semester. So I am anxious to start and get in right away at Rasmussen but I know the program will be a lot cheaper if not better at Century. Help from those in MN!

I would retake the TEAS. If you get a 75 on the TEAS, you have a good shot of getting in to Century. The cost difference is HUGE between Century and a for-profit like Herzing or . I pay about $2500/semester at another MANE school.

You've probably already made up your mind, but here goes. I did one semester at Herzing and then switched to Anoka Ramsey afterword. Herzing seemed starved for lab resources and had no flexibility in scheduling classes at all. It was also a lot more expensive. On the other hand, Herzing was a 36 month non-stop program, which will get you to a BSN much faster than any MANE participating school.

I would definitely retake the TEAS and if that isn't enough, reapply another semester after taking it again and maybe a class or two. I am at Century and am very happy with it so far while I haven't heard good things about . Waiting another semester is better than paying out the nose for lesser program.

My A&P teacher actually does tutoring for the TEAS. It's free and he does it for 12 weeks and he's had people get very high scores. He said he has had students show up from other classes and he doesn't mind. He's a good teacher. I didn't do it myself but would have if I'd known about it and was living in the area when I took the TEAS. Something to think about.

Hello and thank you for your advice! I figured it would be nice to update you guys: I actually got accepted into the Nursing program at St Cloud Tech. It is an LPN route so I will have to reapply again for the RN route afterwards but this option is definitely waaaaaay cheaper than . After posting this I've asked so any other people who have attended there and hated it or have graduated are $30,000 in debt. I am extremely happy with my decision can't wait to start nursing school in the fall. Thanks again for your advice!

Sailors Mars, I'm curious to know if the people/friends you know who attended and graduated from there landed a job? I know it's expensive, but I'm planning on attending there and worried about getting a job to be able to pay back the debt. I have been waitlisted twice at CC and basically tired of waiting. Thanks for any feedback.

I'm starting at -Blaine in July because even though my rubric was high enough to get in the program at AR, a previous employment with a clinical site is preventing me from being able to complete the AR program. A nurse at my current place of employment graduated from Rasmussen and said it was a good program, and another there agreed. I think that because there isn't the same level of achievement needed to get in at Rasmussen as there is in other programs, some folks go and perhaps aren't academically prepared and then waste a bunch of money just to figure that out.

Late post but I know a few nurses who graduated from and love their jobs now. Some even continued to get their RN there and were successful at getting a job afterwards. Not sure if this helps much but when I went to orientation for Rasmussen, they're minimum TEAS score was a 60 to get into their program. Not to mention their NCLEX passing rate is a joke compared to some of the community colleges in the metro. That made a huge difference when deciding which school I wanted to go to. Luckily now 2 years after this post, I am a successful LPN who is currently in the MANE RN program and loving every second of it (and also loving the fact that I am not $30,000 in debt). Hope this helps!

Not sure where you are in your nursing journey right now but I was was denied (not even waitlisted) 3 times before I got into RN school at my local community college. It's totally worth the wait =) I did apply to multiple schools and waited almost 2 years before I could start. In the mean time I ended up with an LPN degree that helped me get a jumpstart on nursing school and job experience. Good luck with everything!
