Prerequisites for RN program at AVC

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone,

So I am currently taking my final prereq (microbiology) for the RN program here at AVC. As you can imagine, I'm pretty darn excited to get these classes behind me and start the real deal. Anywho, last week we were notified that they are adding Math 115 (statistics) to the prereqs. I am not thrilled about this because I haven't been focusing on math because I wanted to get on the waitlist before taking them.

What they are currently saying is, students entering the nursing program Fall of 2015 will have to meet these requirements. Is this going to apply to me? Am I going to be able to get on the waitlist still after I'm done with this semester? If I don't start the RN program (which I don't anticipate being that lucky) by Fall 2015 will I need to make sure I have met the new prereqs? I saw a counselor last week and they weren't sure either? Anyone have any insite on the subject?

I'm planning on going back and talking to a counselor next week to try to get more clarification.

Talking to an admissions counselor is the only way to get accurate information. Good luck.

The counselor did not know?! The advisors and counselors are the ones to ask, they are supposed to know that info! See a different nursing program counselor. If I were you, I would just take the class and get it over with anyway. Some programs allow you to apply to the program with a class "pending" and not finished yet, as long as you anticipate finishing it before nursing school starts. Also, look into math 115 to see if that class in turn has a prerequisite, such as a beginning class like math 99. Before taking statistics, I had to take a intermediate algebra, math 99, before stats. Good luck, you are so close!

Thanks! I called and spoke with someone in the Health and Sciences dept. I have to have my enrollment package submitted by 12/23 to not have to have statistics completed to apply.

I do have to have my statistics class done before I can start the RN program though which is fine (waitlist is 1-2yrs).

to be able to take statistics I have 2 math classes I need to take first, I planned on taking right away anyway.

Oh, the day I saw the counselor was the day they had a meeting about the new changes and apparently it just confused everyone.

I looked at the AVC website and they added Phil 110 as a general ed, which I had not seen before. Had the counselor mentioned any other courses added besides that? I had sent in my application this past June/July with the counselor telling me I was all set. It's a little stressful with the addition/change of classes to take even though we have time to take them lol

Jessica, sorry for being so late! All math classes (including math 115) must be completed before they allow you into the program though you can be on the waitlist.

History 107 or 108, Psy 236 and Phil 110 have been added to the general education.

They actually took me off of the waitlist. They said I needed to retake math since the combined GPA for math and English didn't make the cut :( I wish it was like how you said, but for now I just know I got taken off 😪
