I'm new to allnurses.com but I wanted to share information about an online Microbiology class for those who may be looking for this resource.

I live in Charlotte, NC, but the school is in Shelby, NC, it is Clevland Community College. If you opt to take this course via Distance Education, it's easy to find out the name of the lecturer who teaches the course. The lab is online as well. Visit the site Welcome to Cleveland Community College and click on "Class Schedule" to obtain the information. Should you register for this course, you need to speak with someone in the library in order to obtain a Student ID so you can reigster to Blackboard.

Wow, and online lab, wonder how that works and what anyone would learn!

How could anyone possibly be denied the experience of the odor of "Proteus Vulgaris" which was my unknown ! :lol2: Well I guess you've got to set up your own lab in your living room and get to torture your family with it ? LOL

It should be interesting, I'll defintely makes posts as I get to experience the world of microbiology from my home! I think I'll learn a lot and that it will be a good experience! Luckily the only people I'd get to torture with bad odors and what not are my dog and cat!

:lol2: It will be aromatherapy for your cats and dogs.

I have 3 cats and 2 dogs....it won't be much worse than the litter box smell so at least you would be ok.

LOL @ torturing your family with the living room lab! TOO FUNNY! Let's not forget the fear of spilling staph aureus on your shoes (yes it happened in our lab) funny how the biohazard signs on the test tubes are in no way there to help protect you from accidents like that....just there to let you know how scared you will be of getting a disease if per chance you do spill it. I remember stepping in a spilled substance one lab and coming home one day to my dog chewing on my shoe. She threw up later and I was convinced she had licked up some microorganism.

I took micro online at St. Petersburg College. The lab portion was things like making kimchee (pickled sour kraut) and different kinds of molds in my kitchen. I got an A, but there was a high drop rate.

I also took A&P 1 and 2 online as well. Those labs were purely pictures and being able to identify what the varius organs/body parts were and their functions.

Oh my gosh, how scary!!!! They told us that none of the specimen we worked with were pathogenic, not even the evil e.coli! But the teacher always made sure that we thoroughly washed hands and handled things in a safe manner. I did get a funny rash in my face, so who knows what evil microbes were floating around. I am glad that your doggy is ok.

Pickled Sourkraut :lol2: this makes me laugh because I am German and my grandma made the very BEST sauerkraut from cabbage which we grew in our veggie garden. She also knew how to make some what they would call here "moonshine"....it was Schnapps with raisins in it....some old fashioned receipe that she would rub on sore joints or drink when she had a cold LOL

I took Micro online as well. We had Petrifilms to culture stuff and all of the labs were identical to the in class labs. It was a pain to try to have sterile technique at home, but I didn't feel like I missed out on anything. It was sort of fun culturing stuff like my toothbrush, cutting board, faucets, etc. Although sometimes you don't want to know what is in your kitchen and bathroom that you can't see!
