Online Chemistry and AP1 courses

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I was looking for a good online chem and AP1 course that both had online lab components in order to fulfill most nursing school prereqs. I came across an elementary chemistry course (CHEM 1110) at Weber State University and a human anatomy & physiology course (BIOL 1114) at Alfred State College (SUNY school). Can anyone who has taken either of these courses comment on them? Or has anyone taken other online courses that they highly recommend? I really have no chemistry experience apart from high school, which was so long ago so I am a kind of dreading having to take this class. I'd appreciate any info/recommendations that you guys can provide me with.

Specializes in Med/Oncology, Emergency, Surgery.

Rio Salado Community College has all the pre-req's online.

I took A&P I and II online thru Mayville State University. I would recommend Mayville State.

Hi. How did you guys know that your school accepted these online courses? Are you guys in the same state as these schools?

Rio Salado CC has all the courses online, but be careful b/c they have two different Microbiology courses and one is for 2 credits & the other is for 4 credits. Everything else looks like it would be easy and fast. It's always available too....

Did you have to tell your school that you were taking these courses online first before you took them? I'm in Maryland and just wondering if these courses online are counyed as real credits and if my school will accept them. Thanks!

TineDiddy - To be honest, there is not a requirement (unless you schools says it in writing) that your classes can not be taken online. When you send your official transcripts to your school of choice, it will not say Online or Face-to-Face. Now, since I am overseas, I did ask my school if they will accept it only b/c I didn't know if it would transfer. They told me to send them the syllabus and course description and I did and it does transfer. For me I am only taking my classes online b/c I am stationed overseas. If I was still in the States, I would be in a classroom just b/c Chemistry & Microbiology online is no joke. True it can be done, but you have to really focus and be disciplined b/c they can be hard. I am working with UMUC Europe to get a Micro face-to-face. I have petitioned it and we will see. We have a teacher to teach it and we have over 30 students, we are just waiting on them to agree.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am planning on taking both courses online in the fall while working 40+ hours a week. I've heard they can both be very demanding courses so I hope I will be able to manage. Tinediddy, I had no problems with getting my school to accept these online courses. I just sent the course overview/syllabus for each and had them pre-approved. I didn't even need to mention they were online courses. As long as there is a lab component you should be fine. The courses I mentioned at Weber and Alfred State have lab components that are fully completed online via software programs. No need to even purchase lab kits, which is very convenient. I just don't think I could put up with keeping a dead animal in my apartment. A lot of the other AP1 online courses I have come across require the purchase of in home lab kits, which can contain a cat or a fetal pig.

Thank you guys for the info. I will have to call my school and send them a syllabus and see what they say. If not, I will do these classes the traditional way!
