Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am 50 years old and I am doing my prerequisites. I will be 51 if I get into the nursing program and 52 when I become a LPN. I took care of my mother for 10 years until she passed away in August of 2010 and I decided to go for my LPN. Am I Crazy or should I go for it.

Anyone else did this and was successful?

I start my ADN program in August at the age of 51. I work in the lab at a local hospital and have already been told I will have a job as an RN when I graduate. Then I will do the online RN to BSN bridge that is offered.

My philosophy is that the time will pass regardless, so I might as well be doing something I love.

Keep on keeping on!!

I say go for it , I'm 50 also. I just join this blog to see what everyones concerned about. Like you, I took care of a parent, but with a not so good ending. Recently ,I moved back home and took care of Dad for awhile. I had been in an out of state nursing program, loved it, but failed the math an was dismissed. I didn't give up though, I'm going back in the fall and looking forward to it.

Well, I have you beat on the age.. I am 56 and am going back for my BSN RN. I just finished my first class. Lifespan Developmental Psychology via online course.. It was a 7 wk class too.. Had to do two papers. Online is no joke. I am planning take take 2 courses next semester, one online full semester and the other at the school. I have 8 more classes to take to be able to apply to the BSN program. I will be in my 60's when I get out, so heck, don't worry about age. I am an LPN and have wanted to go back so badly and thought there were no options because I have to work full time but I found BSN program at Brenau University which is nights and with weekend clinicals. I wish I had all my pre-reqs done so I could apply to the program but I just have to be patient. I made an A in my Lifespan class, so now have to get mentally prepared for Statistics and Spanish for healthcare next semester. Time will pass whether you are in school or not, so just go for it. Best of Luck to you.

I too am 51 and starting my program in August. It's like the others said, we will be the same age whether we go to school or not! I think the wisdom of our years is an advantage. Just my opinion. Good luck to all us "ole timers" !

My ex's mom was a stay at home mom for about 16 years before she went back for her ADN, then BSN, then MPH. She became an RN at 40 something. Most of the nursing students are at least 30 if not older. I have a few classmates who were in their 40s at least.

Hi Darlene It sounds like we are in the same boat. I took care of my mother until she passed away and now takes care of my father. I wanted to go for LPN so I could have a good career and room to grow and do something I love too. Lets stay in touch and give each other support.

I read that you didn't do so well with Math. There are some online math tutoring and may be at your college. Good Luck!!!

I am in the same boat! I am 48 and was just accepted into nursing school after working my butt off to get my prereq's done. I am a mixture of proud and scared to death. When I attended my orientation the other day I sat there and changed my mind I think a 1000 times! We can do this, I know we can. Just take one step at a time and perhaps we can all support each other during this process. Good Luck! YOU CAN DO THIS!

Thanks everyone for all of your positive comments. I am taking Psychology I online this summer and Biology I and Psychology 2 in the

fall 2013. When I become a LPN I am planning to work 2 years as a LPN and then go for my RN. I know my mother would be proud

of me and smiling down from heaven.

Hi @faithfl ! I will be 52 when I get my RN! It's never too late. I want to have a satisfying career of 16 or more years as an RN. I say we rock! :)

You all are a true inspiration. :) you show everyone that determination and passion is the key to succeed!

I was 55 when I recieved my LPN, worked a few years, now going for my RN. You can do it!

Congratulations!

Definitely go for it. Nursing isn't about how old you are, it's about how caring and loving you are. If you think you are a kind and gentle person...I say go for it even if you were 100!
