Older Nursing Students

Published

I am 50 years old and I am doing my prerequisites. I will be 51 if I get into the nursing program and 52 when I become a LPN. I took care of my mother for 10 years until she passed away in August of 2010 and I decided to go for my LPN. Am I Crazy or should I go for it.

Anyone else did this and was successful?

I am brand new to the group and this is my first post. I'm so, so happy I found this thread! I have no idea if my post will be seen since this is such an old thread (no pun intended!), but I just had to comment.

I'll be 44 in October. I became an LVN/LPN in TX when I was 20 yrs old. I haven't worked now in nearly 13 years - even put my license on inactive status.

Now I'm considering going back for the ADN or BSN (undecided). But I kept coming back to how old I was going to be before I completed the degree. You all and your comments in this thread just helped me make the decision to go for it!!

Age is just a number and I'm gonna be older no matter what I do. Might as well fulfill my goals and make a paycheck while age is happening! :)

Thanks so much to the original poster and all of you who commented!!

Go for it, you're still a spring chicken! There are a couple applicants to the program I got into who are at least 10 years older than you. I say, we should all spend our time doing what we love.

I'm 43 and I will be starting my ADN program in only 4 days! I will be 45 when I graduate as an RN, I would have loved to gotten started earlier in life but God had other plans for me. This is our time to shine!!

Hi! I am turning 35 this month and decided last year that I want to be a nurse! I began working on my prereqs last year and hope to start the practical nursing program next year! I am married with 3 kids, ages 12, 8 and 2 years. My husband is being supportive about me going back to school. :)

You should be OK. One of my classmates was 53, another was 60. They both found jobs before graduation in 2011. Good luck!

I will be 42 when i re-enter school next year..im very nervous, but know and trust that God will carry me through LVN school..helping me and pushing me forward to graduation and guiding me throughout my soon to be CAREER and beyond! :-) ..I wish all nursing students the absolute best!

How did they do as nurses? Nursing has SO MANY options for careers, and I'm wondering if older nurses do well in fast paced environments like the ER. I've sat and watched nurses in action when my husband was ill, if we weren't in the ER, we were in post op, or hospitalized for health issues. I was fascinated watching the nurses. I observed older nurses rockin and rollin in there, and the sense of comradery was amazing. Are older, newer nurses opting for slower paced working environments, or are they able to handle med surge? My friends who are nurses have been doing it for over a decade..I'm also a late bloomer!
