Officially a Pre-Nursing Student

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I went back to school this past fall intending to go into Health Information Technology. I had wanted to be a nurse when I was younger but never thought I could do it.

I've enjoyed school so much and realized that with work I can get good grades. I've been thinking most of the semester about changing my major and decided to go for it! I'm taking A&P 1 and algebra in the spring and am really excited about it. I'm going part time and taking ALL my gen-ed classes before applying because my youngest is in Kindergarten and I don't want to start such an intense program until he is in 3rd grade.

I'm really excited but also scared. It was hard to admit that I really wanted this!

Specializes in CNA.

Congratulations to you! I too am officially a pre-nursing student. Reality hit when I saw the cost of the books I need for the 13 hours I'm taking!

Specializes in Hospice, Palliative Care.
Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Congrats!

You can get through school with a young one. I'm graduating in May, and my son is in kindergarten. What's great about it is that he's interested in nursing, too, and asks tons of questions about what I'm learning! He loves it! He constantly asks if I'm a nurse yet. :)

Definitely get all of that gen ed out of the way before you start. You'll be glad to have it behind you, and you can graduate with your class.

I am so glad that you stepped up to the plate to go for what you want in life. There is so much power and potential in you that you have no idea. You just have to position yourself in a different way so you can see what's possible.

I have a question for you all...

You guys can't go directly from high school to university to the BScN degree? I find it odd that there's a "pre-nursing" like a "pre-med" where you get a BSc to get into med school.

I live in Canada, and there's no such thing as a "pre-nursing" student in my university because you go directly into the Faculty of Nursing program if you choose to do so. But I'm assuming my University only does this. [FYI, I go to the University of Alberta]

At my school, you have to declare a major when you start there. In order to even declare pre-nursing as your major, your cumulative GPA has to be a 3.0 or higher.

Wow! It's already competitive enough to get into Nursing from my faculty. I can only imagine how much more difficult it is getting into it in that situation.

Yeah, I think it's stupid. I can understand if you were applying to the program itself but just to put nursing as your major? Ridiculous

That's interesting. I'm from Canada as well, but we have the prenursing program here. I'm from Ontario.

I was told that it is possible to go straight into nursing without the prenursing, but you might have to have something equivalent in order to stand out among competition.

Woo hoo! Congratulations! I'm currently a pre-nursing student and so far I'm loving it :p I wish you the best of luck! It's funny - the first semester just ended and all of the people who I thought would still be nursing majors - aren't anymore lol

In one of my courses about 40% were nursing majors and by the end - there were 4 of us LOL
