Who else is taking Nutrition this semester?

I'm in Nutrition, too! It's one of my online classes. It's pretty interesting. Our final grade will consist of 5 exams and 4 projects. We had to do a pyramid comparison, and another project where we took a food label an analzyed it. Next is our abstract. We have to find a nutrition article and analyze it. Our dietary analysis is the final project. We're pretty fortunate at our campus because the dietary analysis software is loaded on the computers in our Academic Support Center. We've had 2 tests and 2 projects so far. I got a 90 and 97 on the tests and 100's on both projects.

You've had a lot of blah this semester, hu? :lol2: Sounds like it would be a helpful project. I havent had any projects but I have learned a lot anyway. I really like the class but it has been a chalenge. I really didnt expect it to be that much.

Keep up the good work.

HI!!! A few weeks ago I finished monitoring my food intake for my semester long project. That was an arduous experience because you have to be exact (1 cup of blah, which has blah in it). I thought the Diet CD would be a lot of help and to a degree it is since it will store and report data, but it was no help in inputing foods it did not already have in its database. At one point I wanted to stop eating!!! Anyway, that is over now and so I am in the analysis phase (doing calculations).

I have had two quizzes and submitted a few homework assignments, essays, and case studies, all of which I have done well. I am continuing to work on my project and gearing up for my midterm exam. Is the semester half way over yet?

How is everyone else doing? I noticed we have a lot of lurkers but not many posters. Share your pain, Lurkers. :lol2:

Sounds like your class is very interesting also. I really dont know how you make those grades with the load you are taking. How much longer do you have till you apply for the program?

I have to apply for the Fall '07 program by February 1st. I am waiting until I have completed this semester so I can get my extra quality points for Micro and A&P II. They base your points on your GPA and NLN scores, primarily, but your 3 science courses give you a much bigger boost in overall points. I got a 124 on my NLN and I have a 4.0, so that gives me a pretty good head start.

To be honest, I don't know how I do it, lol. I try to make really good use of every minute of every day. There are times when I get NO sleep. But, when I have an off week (meaning, not as many tests/assignments, lol) I make up for my lack of sleep. I also have great study skills. I learned from my mother and retained some from high school. I'm not going to sit here and say that I don't have bad times. I get overwhelmed and have been known to sit down and have a good cry, then resume my work, lol.

I am sure you will get in, and you will do great. Want to share some of those study tips with the rest of us? ;) My methods have worked pretty good so far, but I am always open to new ideas.

Is anyone else having fits understanding the TCA cycle? :uhoh3: I am sure after I listen to the lectures a few times and maybe have a chance to read the chapter, I might understand it, but as of yet, it remains a mystery.

Specializes in ED, ICU, MS/MT, PCU, CM, House Sup, Frontline mgr.

wow, texas. i started my class after you and i am covering the same material. what you are experiencing is normal. for a long time i was confused and i took several biology classes that covered the material. last semester i took micro and it finally stuck!!!

do you need to know all the different pathways that all macro-nutrients enter? my class is set up where i have to know them all cold. :trout:

there is one positive aspect to this course. i was talking to a student in her first semester and she informs me that what we are learning in nutrition will be good review before starting nursing school because there is no review in nursing school!!! ;)

i really dont understand it at all. :o i still need to read the chapters. i didnt really have time to do it with all the other tests we have had this week. do you have any really simplified ways to explain it? i havent had microbiology yet. i take that next.

I have a suggestion. Read about the process (it will still be confusing but at least you will be familiar with terms). Then pick an aerobic pathway (you will find that anaerobic is a piece of cake). Sit down with your Professor and ask him/her to walk you step by step through the process. You will find that it is not complicated at all.

I was confused in the past because I did not make the connections between the various cycles. Specifically I did not pay attention to what was produced, what was used, and what was not used. So be sure to note these things when you read since it might help to clarify the process some before sitting down with your professor to ask detailed questions.

Probably a real good idea. I will do that.

I finished Nutrition last weekend. It was a fantastic class, I loved it. I have changed so many of my eating habits from taking it. My 3-day diet analysis was worth 200 pts I got 183 so not too bad. We also had to do a research paper on a vitamin, mineral, or herbal supplement that was with 75 pts I got a 73. The only time I had some trouble was when we got to the chemistry part. So I had to really study that over and over again. I don't know why people would complain about this class, I really really liked it.

I never said I didnt love the class. Did I say I didnt love the class? I said I didnt understand the TCA cycle. I also said that I also have another class, so I hadnt had the chance to read the chapter yet because of tests.

As for anyone else, we all have certain classes we either like or dislike. Some people may not like the class at all, but love other classes.

I for one feel I have found my calling because I havent taken any classes for nursing that I didnt love. Even Pharmacology which kicked my butt to high heaven. I still faught back and ended up 1.6 points shy of an A in a 4 week semester.
