nurse told me prereqs are the hardest part

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I was talking to a nurse yesterday about how I was worried about the intensity of a 1 year ABSN program. She has been working as a nurse for a few years and she told me that the prereqs were the most difficult part for her. Nurses, do you agree?

Specializes in ER.

I disagree. The actual classes are a lot tougher as many nursing classes do not test based on knowledge but on application. A lot more people fail nursing tests than the pre-reqs.

To me some of them are hard now (in my last pre req semester) because though they do inadvertently apply to nursing they are not nursing classes. Thus some of them seem real dry.

What are your study habits like with that much reading? I've never had to study terribly hard. It's been so long, I'm afraid I might have forgotten how to study and I need to know how..

I read every chance I have, trust me, you will remember how to study when you start your nursing classes. Before you start, you have to buy yourself a recorder. I find it very helpful especially during my summer classes. So when your professor lectures, you record his/her lecture (If they can teach well). Then on your way in the car, while people are listening to their music, you should be listening to your lectures while driving and when you have the chance. Also you should be highlighting whatever they emphasize on. When you read the book, make sure you do the study guide questions (I find it helpful because it make me remember little easy things that I could've easily forgot). Also try to have a study partner or group but no more than three people because more will/can cause distractions. I find out that, when me and my group of two or sometimes three do reviews, during my test I always see questions that we discuss about. Also do not study with someone who is not as smart as you or smarter than you. You are not a babysitter, you want people who you can learn from. The more you read the more comfortable you will be during an exam. Also I have an Iphone, when I an reading and do not understand a word or need more information regarding a subject/topic/or disease I Google it on my phone. It helps me a lot! Because in order to eliminate an answer and be sure, you have to know what and why you think that answer is not the right answer but if you are clueless as to what the words or the disease is, you will then be guessing. That's what that works for me, don't know about others! Goodluck, you can do it. It just takes time and determination!!!

that is great advice, thank you so much!
