Not accepted to nursing school, my next step is?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hey everyone,

Just want to see who else is in the same boat as me!

I went to Washington State University for 2 years in 2010, unfortunately I did terrible my first year and a half (didn't care too much). This last year I switched to a community college and my grades improved a TON. However, those first WSU years really hurt my GPA, I'm at a 3.1. I did fairly well on my TEAS test, 82% in the advanced category. To my surprise, I was given the opportunity to interview with the school a few weeks back and it went very well. I didn't get in though, my GPA is just not strong enough. What should my next step be? I'm thinking about taking some more classes at a community college for the next couple of quarters to improve my GPA. Should I retake the TEAS test as well? Please give me your thoughts! Thanks :)

First, Never give up!!There are people who have tried several times to get in and they finally did. Taking a few courses as long as they refer to your program will help a lot. Just stay focused and don't give up!

Don't give up. I took ap2 3 times just trying to get a better grade.

I agree, if nursing is truly what you want to do…don't give up. Apply to ALL the schools within an hour from you. I was able to get into my nursing program with a 3.1 GPA and I had to retake A&P1 because of a family death. My school is not as competitive as some out there. It IS possible to get in with that GPA, you just have to search around. I would also take more classes of course to increase your chances. I took all my general courses, so now all I have to do is nursing classes. Good luck and I wish you the best.

Definitely apply to all the schools you can, even the ADN programs. I used to live in the Seattle area and at first only applied to schools in that area...did not get in. Finally I applied to all over the state and got accepted into two programs in eastern WA, so now I'm in Tri-Cities in my last year of school. It was definitely worth it to expand my school selection. Good luck!

As others have said, don't give up! Keep applying everywhere. The more places you send your application, the more likely it is you'll be accepted. If none accept you this time around, apply again the next time. If you've met all your graduation requirements except for nursing coursework, why not take additional courses while you're waiting to get into a program to further broaden your education? You very well could end up laying the foundation for entrance to a Master's Program later, or a specialization that lands you a job right away.

I'm one of the "poster boys" for persistence and perseverance. I applied to 2 colleges (the others were either closed to 2nd Bachelor's students or too expensive) for 4 consecutive years (8 consecutive semesters). I didn't give up and I ultimately was chosen to attend both programs at the same time, so I had to choose which one to attend! The main thing is that you NEVER GIVE UP. This trait will help you down the road too.
