New to Texas

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I am from Edmonton Canada and now a senior student. I will be migrating for permanent residency to San Antonio TX after graduation.

Im not very familiar with the Us educational system and would like to gather as much as information before I start heading there. I have been researching online on many nursing schools in San Antonio most of them require a prerequisite before being admitted. with that being said where do get those course? I want to take the BSN path and some schools just offers it for junior and senior or RN licensed nurse. That why I am confused.. Is there a school that offers those prerequisite course and roll over to the next step of earning your degree to become BsN?

Hi! I'm in San Antonio, too. There aren't a whole lot of nursing school choices around here, unfortunately. For your BSN you can attend UT Health - which doesn't offer prerequisites. There's also the University of the Incarnate Word, but it's a private institution, and it's pricey. We have University of Texas San Antonio, which offers prerequisites, but no nursing program (it's the same system of colleges as UT Health.

I took all my prerequisite courses at Alamo Colleges - it's MUCH cheaper to take them there than at a school like University of Texas San Antonio. Here's a link: Alamo Colleges : District - there are 5 campuses around town, which makes it really convenient, too.

I've now applied to UT Health.

Thanks Itsthatjengirl! I really appreciate it. I have another question if you dont mind. How long did it take you to finish the prerequisite?

I want to be able to get into a nursing school right away.. I know BSN is like 4yrs... Im thinking thats too long (but worth it) so I may have to get the associate degree first then maybe later BSN. What school would you recommend if I want to get an associate degree? Thanks again in advance.

It took me 5 semesters, but I got an Associate's Degree in Biology and that added a few classes - so it may take you less time.

There are a few ADN programs in town - the one I'd recommend is through Alamo Colleges. Here's a sample degree plan: Program: Nursing: Generic, A.A.S. - San Antonio College - Acalog ACMS™

So really, either way it's going to be 3.5-4 years. Most hospitals around here require ADN prepared nurses to get their BSN in 3-5 years.

There's also a hospital based program, through Baptist Health System. They only have three pre-requisites I think. Registered Nurse - Associates - Programs - Future Students - Baptist Health System - School of Health Professions - they also offer an RN-BSN bridge program, but I'm not sure it's regionally accredited yet - just something to think about if you want to further your education. I don't know much about Baptist's program, just wanted to mention it.
