Microbiology

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

HI all,

I just began an 8 week microbiology class. Does anyone have any study techniques or helpful websites to share? Thanks

W/ micro & A&P, it's really about being familiar w/ all the material. I took micro & A&P at national university, and their classes are 8wks as well, accelerated! And honestly it was so much work! The only trick is really studying & finding a way to not only study, but make sure you're comprehending. There's so much info in sciences, and when you aren't VERY familiar with the content, when you go to take the exams, all the answer seem right lol. So I say just be proactive making sure you study as much as possible and learn all you can! Rewrite you notes! Reread them! I didn't do flash cards because there's so much info, it would take forever to create flash cards! But if you're lucky your instructor will give you a study guide on what to expect on exams. My professor would always say "I don't give study guides, you should be familiar enough w/ the content to be prepared for whatever is on the exams" so she was crazy lol! But it's a fun class, keep that in mind, it has to be fun and interesting to you! And it won't be so bad, you'll do great!

Hi Mdrew:

I found The Microbial World and You helpful for testing myself. I found https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl6_5wIH0DqzQdJBt4_awOg helpful for her microbiology lectures.

Thank you.

I found https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl6_5wIH0DqzQdJBt4_awOg helpful for her microbiology lectures.

I second this site. I found it incredibly helpful in my Microbiology class. I passed with an A when the class average was barely a C.

Hi!

First of all good luck! To ace microbiology make sure to make a lot of lists, charts, comparison tables, etc! There are always comparisons! Like lysogenic vs lytic cycle, etc;

I am good at memorizing things when I write them out a lot! You may be good at that too! Or maybe flash cards? Drawings are helpful too! A lot of micro is processes of stuff. Record your lecture if you can!

I would listen to this Mandy's lecture on youtube she is funny and had the same book that we had.

Most importantly study everyday a few hours a day. Don't slack off. Don't stress out if it isn't sticking in your head. A lot of the terms are hard to understand. The class is about viruses and bacteria! It is really fun and interesting if you have a good teacher. Good luck :)

Omg, those videos are intense! I just watched both parts of the disease videos.

I loved, loved, LOVED microbiology. Thinking about auditing a micro class this Spring since I'll be in Advanced MedSurg and I want a fun class.

I took a 6 week micro class, and I found that just saturating myself with it (which is kind of inevitable) helps. I would study when we finished class, and on the weekends. I didn't work that summer, which helped. I was literally dreaming each night about streaking plates and looking through microscopes! Stay on top of the material, as it's easy to get behind in a fast class (nursing school will be the same way, BTW). Good luck!

I agree with @runbaby

Reread all material given to you in class one day before you go to bed the same night and also reread them the next day too. I discovered that typing my notes/definitions into Quizlet and listening to them seriously helped me more than notecards ever did. I would spend 12-15 hours writing out notecards for micro. Then by the time I got done writing them I had 0 mental energy to study them. Simply listening to notes/definitions through Quizlet in the car and whenever I had free time made micro so easy for me. Not everyone is an audible learner, but I definitely am and I didn't even know it until the last month of my pre reqs.

Thank you all for the advice! I think this class is soo interesting but I'm just so nervous! I'll keep everything in mind! Thanks again!
