low gpa options

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi! Okay, I'm really considering going to nursing school, but my problem is my GPA! I graduated in 2008 with a 2.8GPA and a B.S. in Health and I haven't seen any schools (well ABSN or direct entry MSN) that allow applicants with low GPAs. Can you guys help me out? I currently live in SC, but I'm willing to do a little relocating, as long as its in the Southeast. Any suggestions are welcome..thanks in advance.

That's good advice but it's not that easy. I'm taking prereqs right now and even If I get straight A's in all 18 hours, it will barely make a dent in my cumulative GPA of 130 hours. Sure it will increase my pre-req GPA but most school now a days have a clear "warning" before you apply: It usually says the applicant MUST have CUMULATIVE GPA of 3.0 or above to be considered for the accelerated BSN program.

There are some schools that don't require 3.0 but as you can imagine, they'll be lots of over-achievers applying. So when schools can get an applicant who's got a cum GPA of 3.1, why would they even look at a person with sub 3.0 gpa. They'd rather accept someone who has proven to be successful academically in the past and are capable of excelling. That is emphasized especially when one applies to accelerated BSN program because it is very intensive.

I don't know where you live but in CA every school is soooo different on how they break down the acceptance. So let's say a school has a maximum possible point total of 100 points. The 100 points are broken down into GPA, health experience, TEAS score, foreign language proficiency, etc.

So for the GPA they will give up to 40 points for the prereq GPA. Then up to only 15 points for your entire GPA. So if you had a 4.0 in prereqs and a 2.8 in your cumulative GPA you would get 40 points for the prereqs and about 6 points for your cumulative GPA. So just GPA would be 46 out of 60.

A lot of CA schools put way more emphasis on prereq GPA than cumulative GPA.

But every school is so different. In fact this whole process is driving me insane.

I am applying for ADN programs, BSN programs, ABSN programs, and a couple direct entry MSN programs. I just found out I cannot apply for one of the community college programs because of 2 Ws.

And hey I understand about your 130 units. I calculated ALL my units the other day and I have 251 units. That is scary.

Hello Guys...

Any one know if it is too late to apply for 's ACE program for fall 10??

Thanks

When it comes to GPA calculation (or points), I guess Cali has a good system. I did pretty bad on some upper level science courses and couple of non-science courses, but my pre-req is around 3.2 so if I apply to Cali schools, I guess I could be considered competitive, even though my cumulative GPA is 2.8.

The systems they have are various ways of weeding out people since nursing is sooooo impacted here. I went to an orientation last week for a community college. They said they will get 600 applicants for 20 slots. The 600 applicants is after they weed out people including myself because of a W. I have anywhere from a 3.2 to a 3.6 depending on what school is calculating my GPA but this weird formula at Ohlone College forbids me from applying to their school.

It is all wacked here and many people at many schools get turned away with 4.0s because there are just not enough spots. I heard San Francisco State's nursing program is harder to get into than Harvard. SFSU has 1,500 applicants for 80 slots. I don't have a 4.0 so I didn't bother applying.

I just found out that the the 1 CA state school I did apply to I did it wrong so I am not in their pool. I applied to Humboldt State and sent various info to various depts and was just informed I never applied to the nursing dept which requires a separate application. Oh it is so frustrating because I have been in contact with people at that school and the process is sooo confusing. I swear they do this just as a way too weed out people.

Well I really hope I get called to an interview for Louisiana State University in New Orleans. They have an 18 moth ABSN with very, very low out of state tuition because Louisiana still needs people in their state.

OK, end of rant.

Hello Guys...

Any one know if it is too late to apply for Drexel's ACE program for fall 10??

Thanks

I applied about 3 weeks ago and found out yesterday I got in.

Mommaof 3, Where did you go to school for your RN taht offered this interesting program?

Specializes in LTC, Med-surg.

How committed are you to nursing school? Are you sure you can keep up the hardship that is nursing school? Nursing school is rigorous and its not for those that are not dedicated and willing to break some mental sweat over.

I think you should reflect on your potential before you make the choice to go to nursing school. A 2.8 GPA is not a very high GPA so it might limit your entry into some nursing programs.
