losing hope.. any options?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone

I am a fourth year student finishing up my BS in Health Science here at CSUEB (I'll be finished this summer 2013). I have a 3.67 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA on my science classes (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology). I scored 75.3 on my TEAS V and that was already my second attempt. I do not have any volunteer experience in health care, but I did work as a caregiver for 2 months in a group home for mentally disabled adults. I currently do not have any letters of recommendation and I suck at essays. I have applied to 9 California nursing programs (both BSN and ASN) and 1 nursing program in Pennsylvania. 2 schools rejected me and the rest put me on a waitlist. This is my second year of my applying and im seriously losing hope.. Anyone know of a program that would be a good fit for me?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried asking any former employees or professors for letters of recommendation? Have you looked into schools that do not require the entrace exams or the TEAs? Maybe try volunteering? Going to your school's writing center to help with your essay? Retaken some of your science pre reqs to raise your science GPA? Or maybe even applying to more nursing schools outside of CA? There a lot of things you have can to increase your chances of getting admitted.

Do not give up! If nursing is your goal, go after it!

Letters of recommendations do not have to be solely from teachers/professors. Although, it does not hurt. Can you not get a letter of recommendation from the owner/manager/anyone from the group home for mentally disabled adults? What about letter of recommendations from anyone in a church group or youth group (if applicable)? Do you have a family friend/acquaintance that is a nurse?

Do get some writing assistance if you truly believe you " suck at essays," whether it be at your college's writing center or tutoring or other methods of tutorial. Writing is essential in nursing school (all those care plans and essays to write!), so it would behoove you to build on that skill.

You can also try to apply to private schools; however, they are pricey, but they may be less competitive.

Good luck!

Congratulations!

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Congrats! I was going to say to keep applying to every ADN program you're willing to move for, because they all have lottery systems, and you could do your RN-BSN later.

Good luck with your program!
