Just received a A D+ in psychology

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello I am currently a college student at a 4 year university. I have decided to pursue a career in Nursing. Today the final grades for my psychology class have been posted and I did receive a D+. In all the other pre-reqs I have A's. I have taken Statistics and College Composition and have an A in both of those. I even have a letter of recommendation from my writing teacher. I just could not find ways to study for Psychology, it was an all memorization class. Towards the end I was able to study better and was doing a lot better. I would like your honest opinion, should I still pursue a Career in nursing although I failed one of the prereqs... it is still really early in my journey for the rest of the pre-reqs and my goals are straight now. Please share your thoughts, positive or negative. My school does offer the choice to retake the course and replace the letter grade with the better one.

I don't think you should let this prevent you from pursuing your educational plans.

Thank you for your response. It is just really discouraging seeing how one class can really prevent you from going into nursing and getting into almost all the programs. I do plan on retaking the class and do everything I can to get an A in it.

That's all you can do. Good luck!

That's the best way forward, actually. Do whatever you can to get a better grade the 2nd time around. If you're able to do well, you're showing "them" that you're capable of overcoming an adversity. Just don't repeat too many classes... Mostly you'll show yourself that you're more than capable of getting through a tough (for you) course.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your feedback. It's bad enough being discouraged by people around me and their stereotypes of a man becoming a male nurse.

I have learned that the professor is key for me. I recommend you look at a site called ratemyprofessor.com

I used this while I was in school and I found it helpful when choosing courses where I didn't know professors. If you find yourself struggling in the beginning of a class talk to professor about your difficulties and if that doesn't help withdraw before it counts against you and try it again with another instructor. I did this a few times and it saved my gpa. You might be the person that struggles with "touchy-feely" subjects and breezes through hard science classes, I am the opposite, math is my kryptonite lol. It takes all kinds to make nurses!

Definitely retake the class. I have a couple of repeats because I tried to take too many classes at once while working (yeah, hard lesson there!). I just had my pinning tonight, and graduate tomorrow! Don't let one repeat hold you back. Just be sure to check repeat policies where you apply.

Yes, yes, and more yes. The professor is EVERYTHING.

I breezed through my Statistical Analysis class which was all formulas and mathematical stuff, I developed a really great relationship which i believe is the reason I did so well in their. So I will definitely take your advise and develop relationships with the professors! Thanks again guys for the support I really needed it!

Take a moment to reflect on what you really want in life and what went wrong in this class. If nursing is what you truly want, find the motivation, retake the class, and kick ass!
