Is Ameritech Worth it?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

After a lot of soul searching, I decided earlier this year that I really want to be a nurse. I recently moved to Utah from the East Coast and I'm not very familiar with the nursing schools out here. So here's the deal, I'm in my mid-twenties and I just don't have the kind of time to do two years of pre-reqs and then sit and wait 2-5 years on a wait list, which I'm told is about average. I've spoken with an NP that I work with and he recommended Ameritech in Draper, UT. They do have a high NCLEX pass-rate, one of the highest in the state actually, it is accredited by the ACEN, and I've spoken with a few students that are currently attending and they love it. What's really holding me back is the price tag.

It's a big price tag.

I would just like to know if anyone can tell me how well this school prepares you for real-life nursing and how seriously employers take this school. And if you attended Ameritech, how easy was it to find a job afterwards and how easy is it to get into an outside RN-BSN program after the fact?

Specializes in Dialysis.

How high is price tag? What is actual job demand for new grads in your area (many areas flooded with new grads)

I am also in Utah. All of the local colleges have moved away from the traditional "waiting lists." Now the best students get the positions. After training many new nurses and working with students I can tell you that I personally notice a difference between different programs. My advice is to take another look at local colleges - specifically the University of Utah and Weber State programs. SLCC seems to be a little more difficult to get into and Westminster is expensive. Also, many of the local hospitals will now pay for your BSN after you get your Associate degree.

I graduated from this RN program last week. If you feel comfortable giving me your email I can provide you a lot of detail and thoughts on the program.

The most recent stats (website link below) show Ameritech College actually outperforming BYU and U of U nursing programs in regards to NCLEX pass rates, the biggest factor in determining a nursing schools success. Ameritech has crafted an amazing program. Their small class size enables a trusting and productive environment. I graduated from in 2013, and left fully the program mentally and emotionally fully prepared. It was easily worth every penny.

I'm reading many views discouraging people from attending schools such as Ameritech. I'm guessing such posts are meant to help, however, it sounds as though these people may be getting their information via unreliable sources. As someone who went to SLCC, UVU, BYU and Ameritech, I can honestly say Ameritech was the right choice for me. They have a great program with great student and administration moral. While Ameritech is extremely strict and fiercely demanding when it comes to homework, expectations their students etc. they also do their part in providing an environment of intelligent instructors who are well educated in being able to teach different teaching methods in order to aide you in learning the way that's most natural.

One suggestion I would make is to do your GE's and prerequisites (pathophysiology, anatomy etc) at SLCC. The longer class term cultivates a firm foundation of knowledge that nursing classes can build upon. Good luck!

Hey ICUman, RN! I have been looking into Ameritech as well, would you mind emailing me your thoughts and details on the program? I would appreciate it!
