I feel like I'm not going anywhere in Nursing!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am currently feeling discouraged because the counselors at my school are telling me that there is no way that I can follow my dreams with this form of GPA. I called up several nursing programs and they are telling me that if I do not have a 3.8+ GPA then I should not bother applying. I am in my second year attending a local community college in California and I am currently working several prerequisites until I transfer into a four year university. My problem is chemistry and I suck at it. No matter how hard I try, I am not receiving A's for that course, but rather I am getting a B. I took inorganic chemistry and got a B+ and I am currently taking organic chemistry and it is crazy hard! I am nearly pulling off getting a solid B, but I want to strive for an A. If I struggle with chemistry, there is no way that I can survive microbiology because it was a big killer for many students! I currently have a 3.5-3.6 overall GPA and I feel there are so many students who are way smarter than me that are getting into the program---just like a snap. I don't know what else to do if I do not get accepted? I wish I could retake my chemistry courses but my school does not allow that unless you receive a D or F. I plan to apply to 8+ schools that also include CSU's and several out of states and see if they would accept me? Again, I am avoiding SFSU and CSU East Bay because this is what they told me and I was discouraged hearing those words from them. I was wondering what can happen if I do not get accepted to the program and what should I do? What are your stories with nursing school when you were applying? I would love to hear them since I am new to this website so I would like more input on pre-nursing students! :D

I would've attended straight into a four year university, but I can't afford to pay tuition and fees, yet my family cannot afford to help me pay off for my education since they make less than $25,000K per year. I plan to get a BSN because there are more job opportunities where you could climb the ladder, such as being a travel nurse, case manager, public health nurse, and many more options. I am from the Bay Area, so the nursing programs are highly competitive over here---especially the ADN degree, but it isn't as bad. I just know that there are some schools I want to attend any BSN program California like CSU Long Beach, Sacramento State, or just anywhere that can accept me--- I will go! I just feel that there is no chance because most schools are like "Getting lower than a 3.8 will not guarantee you a spot since there are way more applicants than seats available." Who knows with my current GPA (3.6) will go lower if I take Microbiology or remain the same? :/ Buuuut, I am willing to go out of state whether they will accept me or not! As you mentioned Memphis and the South, it is worth a shot, but I still want to keep my options open. I do anticipate on heading back to California and become an RN there.

When folks tell you what you CAN'T do, that should be enough to push you to do MORE and do BETTER, or else you'll whine and get depressed and allow the words of others to define you.

My short story, had a GPA of 1.3, had to retake LOTS of classes PLUS some to boost my GPA. I got 4.00's when I retook my classes, even some how got on the deans list. Now my cumulative GPA was still kinda struggling. I had a cumulative of a 2.9 when I was accepted into nursing school. I worked harder and studied harder than any other student in that program because I had to prove to myself and my professors that I deserve to be in that program. I tell you this to encourage you :)

Forget what they say...keep pushing, keep striving to make your dreams come true. Don't you dare stop, KEEP GOING! You WILL see your dreams come true.

Jesus Keep Me: there is a saying by Iylant Vazant who said the bumble bee's body is so big and the wings is so small that it should not be able to fly, the only thing, no one told the bumble bee that, sometimes when we have goals to accomplish we need to keep quiet like the bumble bee, sometimes people mean well, " they will talk about how others did not make it and all the problems that go along and in the end you will be talked out of your goals, the bumble bee does not talk about not being able to fly and neither should we"

i recently graduated from csueb and plenty of people in my cohort had 3.5 GPAs. that's crazy talk. please apply. make up for it with a good TEAS score and you will be fine. it's not as insanely competitive as people like to tell you.

I find CSU sacramento to be very weird! They told me that they go by the point system and have about 145-160 slots (can't remeber) and they're alot easier to get into. I feel as if I'm on the same boat as you as to I have a 3.5 gpa and if I don't get at least a B in anatomy class I won't get into anywhere. I got a back up plan to major in molecular bio though. Do you plan on trying to apply at san jose state? Because instead of the 4 science classes they base your gpa off of 6 plus othe rminor classes: speech, eng, stats, micro, anatomy, physio I believe.

Sac state only takes 80 students per semester. And you really need a 3.8 or higher. You might be able to get in with a 3.6-3.7 if you have an amazing teas score

Keep up the good work and try not to stress. All schools will tell you you have to have all A's .Its not true B's are good too . Actually some of the best nurses's I know were B students!

How was CSUEB like? When you mentioned that you graduated from the institution, it was probably that transfer/freshman applicants had a lower GPA at the time, and as the years progress, I knew that the average GPA may raise higher than the previous year? I never took the TEAS test, but I think you must take that during the fall, so I will take that the following fall. However, I am so nervous about taking the TEAS exam because I wonder if I will score high enough to compensate my GPA as I did not get any volunteer hours to make my application stand out! >_> Grrr! I liked how you mentioned SJSU because I live like a few blocks from the school, and that is pretty crazy since I was considering it as my last resort school as I would like to get out of the city for exploring the subarbs..hehe. But as I said before, I will go to any school that admits me! SJSU only has like 60 seats, but they get around 200+ applicants. I mean if you have one B in your anatomy class, you should be fine. I am the one struggling as I am getting two B's on my transcript and I don't know what I might get in microbiology. I will have an alternative major as I must rethink plan B since it really is tough deciding what to do with your life, especially if you can't get into nursing. :/ I'm just not sure if I may stand out because what if there are many students with the exact GPA and score as me? Must I be the alternative meaning I am on the waitlist until someone decides to withdrew from entering the program? You are right, most schools are having me let go of my dreams and that is why I felt that I have no hope for getting into any nursing program, or else, i must flip burgers for the rest of my life if i cannot find a stabilized job. I just suck at chemistry and thats why I am getting B's in those courses. :( How many B's are allowed in the transcript to be considered besides excelling on the TEAS test?
