Hybrid Class

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I was wondering what people think about taking hybrid classes-part online and part in the classroom. I am currently taking microbiology and the class is on line with lectures posted and then we go to lab on 6 different days for 5 or so hours and take the exams. What do nursing schools think about that time of class? I have seen posts that say nursing schools don't look favorably at online science or math courses but this was the only way my community college offers the class. It was either take micro this way or not at all and its in an accelerated version. I would hate to be told a school wouldn't accept it with all the work I have to put in to it. I had the same professor previously for a class at the college and it is just as hard if not harder since you don't hear her lectures. Finally how do you answer a nursing schools form that asks whether a class was online or traditional and the only option is a pull down menu where you have to pick one or the other? I picked online and then in the notes put it was a hybrid class but I didn't have room to explain what was meant. Should I send a note with the transcript? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it...I believe the majority of nursing schools that do have a problem with the online format are most concerned that the labs and/or exams are done on-campus, which you're doing. There are quite a few of us here on the forum taking online science classes and I have yet to run into someone who is at a school that would not accept the credits. I really think you will be fine.

Many schools these days teach a variety of courses in hybrid format, so your school will probably know what that means when they see your note on the online application. I wouldn't include a note with your transcript because, to my knowledge, transcripts don't list whether a class was in traditional/online/hybrid format anyway. However, if there is any doubt in your mind, give the school a call and ask! That way, you can either get peace of mind that everything is okay and/or have the opportunity to clarify.

One of the school's applications online asks whether a class was online or traditional. Thankfully I have only seen this in one application. I don't like drop down menus as this application has since you can't clarify what you mean when you select a or b. (also what does the NC part of your name mean?) Thanks.

Yep, I can see your dilemma...however, you said you explained in the notes that it's a hybrid class, right? I still feel that would sufficiently explain the class format and will probably be acceptable, but you never know...I'd definitely follow up with a phone call instead of a note with the transcript.

I have a BA and am applying to 2nd degree bachelor programs. Microbiology is the last class I need for most of the schools I am looking to apply to (a few seem to have their own special prereqs even if you already have a BA like intro to sociology or religion so I may take one this Fall). I am planning to apply this Fall but need to decide if I want to do a 12-14 month program or the 24 month program-both have their pluses and minuses.

I would just call that school and ask their advice. Tell them that you are taking a hybrid course and their online application doesn't give you an option for that and what do they recommend you do about it. As NC_RN_2B stated, I think most of the issues they have are whether there was a lab component to the course and clearly for you, there is. Best of luck to you. I've seen hybrid courses offered at one of our 2-year colleges and it sounds like a great compromise for people.

Definately call and clarify it but I would think you could call it traditional because they are probably most concerned with the lab part and that was done in traditional style.
